Report the dog to animal control? Or leave an anonymous note? Ugh I don't know what I would do. My husband snores all night and keeps me up and I'm thinking of writing him a note.

@anonysquire: I called the cops on them one time, because they left the dog outside, w/o shelter, when it was 30 degrees out... And I was tired of the barking.
I sleep with earplugs because DH snores, so I feel your pain.

@anonysquire: haha, so does mine.... A fan helps drown it out.
@BabyBoecksMom: UGH! I'm sorry -- do you have white noise, does it help? I would either write them a note, or report the dog if you want to keep it anon... We used to have a neighbor that drove a mustang that would rev the engine and do a 400 point turn out if his driveway at 4:30am every day. Sooooo annoying. We got used to it - then he moved.

You can hear it all night from 4 houses down? That's some loud barking. Is it outside all night? I might call animal control-- that's not just normal annoying dog barking whenever someone drives by, there is something weird about that.
In the meantime, I second the white noise. I sleep with a fan on in our room every night (facing away from us when it's cold) because my upstairs neighbors are pretty loud, and it helps. I also had a roommate whose yorkie used to bark all the time, because she took horrible care of it, but I couldn't exactly leave my roommate an anonymous note! (Though our neighbors did!)

Report it. If anything you can say you were concerned that the dogs were trying to get help for an accident.

@Foodnerd81: @BabyBoecksMom: I agree - it sounds like the owners are negligent, as strong a word as it is. My dog is a serious barker, but absolutely would not get away with barking all night.

@sorrycharlie: Even if your dog barked a lot at night, wouldn't it be inside, which would make hearing it 4 doors down seem pretty hard. Next door, maybe. I know some dogs live outside year round and are fine, but a residential neighborhood doesn't seem like the right place for that. (I could be wrong, I've never had an outside dog-- all our dogs are pampered little wimps

I just dealt with this actually!
My neighbor about 5 houses away has TWO dogs. A big one and a small one and they bark from about 4pm to about 10pm every day. They probably start earlier, but that is when I get home from work. Anyway, I called Animal Control and they went over there and talked to them. The dogs were fine for the next day or two. Buuut now they are back at it again and I kinda want to call them again. Or go over there myself and ask them if they are deaf or just don't give a shit that they live in a neighborhood.

I would call and report it every night that it happens. It's rude to let your dog bark all night and it's not good for animals to be out in bad conditions!

I'd leave an anonymous note, and if it continues, call and report it every day! That's just disrespectful and rude!

I would call either animal patrol or the cops. Its not fair to the dog or the neighbors!

We have the same problem. In Feb I went over one night, we are 4 houses down, and across the road, our livingroom and bedroom is at the back of our house (opposite from where dog is) and I've let them know how we can hear the barking.
Last night it was an hour solid, I am working on logging his barking now and will be submitting to to make a complaint to the city. I feel bad, if he's left outside barking like that I can't imagine his inside life is very good, why do people get dogs!!! He is the same breed as our dog and we have received complaints from the city for our barking dog (only our dog doesn't bark, lol) so we think people are mistaking him for this one that's driving us craaaaazy.

I would approach them and if that doesnt work (as others said) report it.

@Alivoo01: YEP! Same.
We had the same problem a few years ago. These people practically made this non-outdoor dog live outside. It would cry and yelp at the back door ALL.DAY.&.ALL.NIGHT. It was terrible.
I called our bylaw number to see what I could do and they told me that I would need to keep a diary of the times and weather conditions that the dog was outside and also get their address. Eventually my husband just walked over to their house one night and the owners weren't home but the daughter (an adult) said that the dog was blind so that's why it yelped all the time. (not because it was in freezing cold or raining or too hot weather).
Anyway, she apologized and we haven't had any problems since. I think it's because the dog passed away and not because they really did anything about it.

I think I'm going to try to talk to them tonight about it, and if that doesn't work, I'll call the cops again.
I have two, very large dogs, and I never let them bark outside when I'm home - that's just disrespectful to the neighbors and the dogs. I know this dog has to be keeping the owners up, if it's keeping us up. I feel so sorry for the dog - it's not fair to keep a dog if you're just going to leave it outside.
@.twist.: I'm going to keep a diary of it tonight and hopefully I can build a case against them.

Videotape the sounds and the time, use your phone. Listing things is good, but a video with sound is better. Do you have an HOA? Otherwise animal control or police.
I used to live next to a vet clinic and train station, so I adapted by sleeping with a fan near my head.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I was tempted to throw some cheese stuffed with benedryl over the fence.... he he he
@lemondrop: That's what I was about to do this morning. I'll have to remember to do that tonight. I was outside when I called the cops the other night so they could hear how loud it was. And that it was a nonstop barking, not a few barks and then stop, then bark again.

@BabyBoecksMom: lol, the Benadryl crossed my mind, but that would be an unprofessional suggestion since I am licensed
Wasn't there a Seinfeld about a barking dog...

@BabyBoecksMom: I feel your pain. There are 2 dogs near me that bark ALL day long. Their owner must leave them out during the day and let them in when they get home or something because thankfully they do not bark at night.

Just wanted to update:
While I was giving DD her bath, DH actually walked over to the neighbors house and told him the barking needs to stop. The guy apologized and said that his MIL and her dig were staying with them until next week, and that he's not a dog person so it was staying outside. DH told him that he understands he might not be a dog person, but he needs to do something with it besides leaving it out, because he's being very inconsiderate to the dog and his neighbors by letting it bark at all hours.
I was floored that he went over there, much less said all that to him! The dog hasn't barked yet tonight - I really hope it stays that way
