Junebugmama's post about being an outlier in the HB community got me thinking about the thing that makes me feel outlier-y here is being queer. A few bees chimed in that they'd like to see more LGBTQ and other non-traditional identities/families represented on HB.
What do you think would make this community feel more welcoming? What changes would make you feel proud recommending this community to LGBTQ friends?
For me, visibility of other people "like me" would help. So, I'll kick things off with some self-disclosure/coming out.
I identify as queer -- I've had attractions to and relationships with people across the gender spectrum. When I was 19 I started dating the woman I eventually married. We split up, amicably, a couple years ago after 8 years of marriage.
My current sweetie is male and lives/presents as a man, but, his self-identification is more genderqueer. Sometimes it can be frustrating that people assume we're a married, hetero couple. Neither of us are straight, my sweetie isn't exactly a man, and I'm still legally married to my ex-wife.
