Ugh Bees, I'm so bummed. I'm trying to do the "responsible" thing and get Life Insurance in case, God forbid, I die and Hubs has to take care of Xander all on his own. I thought I had found a good company that was going to give me decent coverage at an affordable rate but nooooooo... my ITP (low platelet count) makes me a high risk and so the coverage I wanted will cost me THREE TIMES what I was quoted and is no longer something I can afford!

Try reaching out to companies and finding out if they underwrite it differently. You can usually find insurance company' underwriting guides online, actually, and search for different things and see how it is rated.
I know it sucks being rated regardless, but definitely still do the insurance. Maybe look into reducing the term, amount, or seeing if you can appeal the rating based on a letter from a doctor discussing your ITP and its relationship to your mortality.

@BakerBee: I had no idea that my platelets would be taken into consideration since they're normal for me, but I guess I get it. I'll have to see if I can find guides for other insurance companies. But if I do go with this company, I will get a reduced amount and they also said they would add on a reconsideration waiver so in a year if my platelets are holding steady above 80,000 (which they won't be because my norm is in the 70s, sigh), then I could get a reduced cost.
@snowjewelz: I'm thinking I'll get the insurance and then shop around and cancel it if I find something better. I might even see is my husband can get spouse life insurance when he does his benefits next year because he works for an insurance company and got a great rate on his own life insurance and they didn't require a medical test, so maybe I can get the same through him!

My husband has a chronic illness that unfortunately comes with a rating. We've got as much life insurance as we can, plus he does get some through work (3x salary). I would get it now, in case anything else were to come up (heaven forbid), and the rating would increase!
I'm glad I got mine when I did. I got GD with my pregnancy, which would be a problem for life insurance companies — I have an increased risk of getting Type 2 diabetes now.

@tinyperson: Sorry you had to deal with this too with your husband! It's so frustrating! And yes, that's exactly what the life insurance person said - she said that if I decided not to get it now and waited, there's no guarantee I'd be able to get the rate they're suggested and God-forbid something happens, I might end up with an even higher rate! Sigh.
