Like (almost love) the name, but not the initials...

DH and I are pretty set on S/ophie as a first name, and want a 2 syllable middle name.

So far, we are liking S/ophie E/lise

But, our last name starts with C, so her initials would be "SEC"

Is it really that bad?? Our other 2 have consonant middle names so no such problem, but we're having trouble finding a 2 syllable middle name we both really like for this one!

Would the not-so-great initials turn you off to the point that you find another name?

The other one we're thinking of is S/ophie K/atelyn but I think the emphasis on the 2nd syllable in E/lise flows better...? Any thoughts or suggestions?

Sophie Elise is beautiful! I don't see anything wrong with the initials SEC. Plus, the more formal monogrammed stuff would be SCE

Is it because of Southeastern Conference -- SEC? If you hadn't said you were concerned about the initials, that wouldn't have even occurred to me!

Makes me think of the Securities and Exhange Commission SEC, not the sports division lol but it wouldn't deter me!

@regberadaisy: @hilsy85: @SugarplumsMom: @MrsSCB: LOL! Is it just me?? I can't help but think of the federal Securities and Exchange Commission and overall when I see SEC it isn't a nice as ay SJC or something.

But, I do like the name and am feeling so much better after reading your responses

The only problem I could see with SEC is if you're a huge college football fan - the SEC can be polarizing. Otherwise, I don't see anything wrong with those initials!

@hilsy85: One of my close friends from high school and I both go by nicknames based on our initials. So, sometimes they do get used!

@mauxie: Lol, clearly I am very sports minded (thanks to my husband anyway) because that did not occur to me! I think you're good regardless, though. I never really use or even think about my initials. Or other people's!

Ha I don't think you need to worry about SEC. I have a friend that was SAD before marriage and there are other three letter combos that would concern me more. This is literally not on my radar.

@mauxie: LOL I would have NEVER thought of the Securities and Exchange Commission! I think it's totally fine. If we have a boy, he'll probably be JUL or CUL, which are both kind of gross, but no one really uses intials anyway!

@mauxie: If it makes you feel any better, DS is the Federal Trade Commission... FTC. I noticed it when we picked the names, but literally I am the ONLY person who has.

Your post actually made me chuckle a little bit because DH told me I was the only weird one who would think of something like that

I don't see what's so wrong about SEC. It's not like it's ass or something. I wouldn't worry about it.

My 1st thought was southeastern conference, but I live in Louisana and went to LSU. I doubt others would think that if they weren't from the south.

Beautiful name! OK so the only thing I can think of is the Securities and Exchange Commission? I don't see anything wrong with those initials unless I'm missing something!

The only initials that are unacceptable in my opinion are FUK and ASS. Everything else is in the clear!

I don't associate SEC with anything at all and would never worry about those initials. Honestly, we gave our LO a name that gave her questionable initials, but no one has ever noticed or said a thing.

I immediately thought college football (football on the mind for our first game tomorrow) but it would not deter me from using it. I never even though of the other!

She just can't change her name if she married someone with the last name that starts with an X

SEC is totally fine as initials! If that is your only concern about the name, I think you have a winner!

I think it's fine.

I second guessed our name choice because of the initials VJ. our sonographer is the only person who's noticed that could be awkward (we were talking nicknames and she said the initials out loud), but we're probably still going with it.

SEC is fine. I thought of the federal agency too, but there are a lot of three-letter acronyms in government and avoiding them all in naming a child seems pointless. Think of all the things that would be "out": OMB, DOJ, IRS, DoD, DEA, EPA, DOL, CBO, LoC...and on and on!

I also looked at the initials as some of our choices turned out to be LCD or LED- hubby said no one would notice (initials are NOT a big thing here in Germany anyway), but I did not want a TV or lightbulb kid

I did think of the government agency first and the football conference second since you asked specifically about the initials. But I don't think either of those are problematic associations and I think the name is great!!!
