My LO has diarrhea from a viral infection (Roseola I think). How will I know when it's gone? She just pooped a watery green poop but her last one was 20 hours before. I thought I would be back at work today.
Last time she had green watery poop she wasn't on solids yet and it lasted two weeks. At that time the doctor said it wasn't diarrhea but I think that was just so we could go back to daycare.

I don't think watery necessarily means diarrhea. Her stomach could still just be off from being sick. Our daycare defines diarrhea as uncontainable.

I think my daycare classifies diarrhea as 5 or more loose stools in a day. It's pretty subjective IMO.
If they saw one green, watery poop, I'd probably get a call but most likely they wouldn't have me come pick them up.
Is this what your doctor said, when it's gone to go back to daycare, or is that what the daycare said?

It could last anywhere from several days to two weeks . . . Has your LO been limited to mostly clear liquids/Pedialyte? A diet of nothing but clear fluids (like Pedialyte) for more than 2 days can cause green, watery stools ("starvation stools").

Oh, so even this might not have been diarrhea? She had 5 stools in 24 hours at it's worst.
@T.H.O.U.: "uncontainable" terrifies me.
@sunshineandsushi: we haven't been to the doctor this round of illness. We've been talking to an advice nurse. She said the only reason to come in is to get a doctor's release for daycare. Daycare said, and I think it's the regulation in the state, that diarrhea must be gone for 24 hours before return. But maybe this isn't diarrhea after all?
@MsLipGloss: LO only drank BM all weekend, refusing everything else I offered, but nursed normally. She's also at the stage where she has to feed herself - with a spoon. That's not too efficient for an 11 month old. She finally ate a noticeable amount yesterday.

@Corduroy: if you think LO has roseola then that's a totally different story. You have to wait until her sores get to a point that they are no longer contagious. Usually dried up and crusted over.

@Corduroy: I'm not familiar with Roseola at all. If it were my LO, and I was thinking she should be fine to go to daycare, I'd take her to the doctor and get a note confirming that it's okay to be at daycare. My daycare always wants that note, so I've found it saves time to just get it when I think it's likely they'll call me anyway. GL!

it is a nasty virus and heart wrenching to watch your kid go through it. Please do not send your child to daycare if you think she has roseola. Even though when they develop symptoms it's technically no longer contagious most daycare policies want you to wait till the sores are dried up.

@locavore_mama: The Roseola rash is not contagious. Roseola itself is not highly contagious either.

@MsLipGloss: read above. I just said that. I'm only saying most daycare policies (per all my mom friends who kids also had roseola) don't want you to send your kid back till the sores have crusted over. And it IS contagious before the symptoms develop. It spread through my LO's daycare class.

@locavore_mama: That's different than what I've read and what the advice nurse said. The advice nurse said she wouldn't be contaigous once the fever was gone 24 hours (except if she has diarrhea). As long as daycare doesn't have a no rash policy, which they don't, there was no reason not to send her back (except diarrhea). She didn't really get "sores" though. Just a rash that seems to be fading.

@Corduroy: ah OK. I didn't know if you had already asked daycare about their roseola policy. Most of the daycares I know won't let you send the child back until the rash has crusted over.

@locavore_mama: Both are incorrect. Roseola doesn't produce crusty sores, just a blanchable rash. I think you may have your illnesses confused.
My point was to emphasize that the rash itself is not contagious. Truly, the only reason to keep your LO home is if she has a fever/diarrhea, and has not been free of those symptoms for at least 24 hours.

Ok we got a late morning doctor's appointment. I wonder how much time pediatricians spend writing daycare clearance notes.
