LO is so HOT!!

Ugh LO is VERY hot to the touch all night long, but my thermometer was only reading a low grade fever around 99.6 taken both underarm and temporal. He hates getting his temp taken so I don't want to do rectal. He has the ouchies and is grumpy, but grumpiness is pretty normal for him. Otherwise he seems fine. Not sure what to think...

Asides from his FPIES and everything that goes with it LO has never been sick with a virus/cold. I cannot help but wonder if this has anything to do with stopping breastfeeding....and again mama guilt kicking in.

Okay I just retook it while distracting him so he wasn't pulling it out and it is up to 102.8! I'm supposed to work this afternoon, but I don't want to go in if he is sick! Poor little guy.

Do you go to daycare? Because they won't take your LO if they have a fever.

I'm sorry your little guy is sick. It's rough.

I wouldn't AT ALL blame it on stopping breastfeeding. AT ALL. Do not have guilt there. Babies who are breastfed exclusively can still get sick. My little one is still nursing and it seems like she's been nothing BUT sick all winter! A little off-topic, but we've had really good luck with an in-ear thermometer. I find the temporal temps to be way, way off, and I had read a few articles about the efficacy of the in-ear ones even in small babies. I suspect his fever is probably a little higher than what you were registering, but still not dangerously high. Sounds like it might be a virus.

@littlek: Thank you. No we do not do daycare. He goes to my mom's since DH is working. Sadly she will insist that I go to work no matter what.

olive is still breastfed at 17 months and she's had cold after cold since 3 months so don't blame yourself! getting sick is a normal part of an infant's life.

@anbanan15: I would call your Ped and take him in. That's a little too high (over 101) for me to want to wait and see.

@Monkula: What brand in ear do you have? I should go pick one up since he hates having his temp taken so much. I HATE the temporal too! It NEVER works. By the way thanks for the knock down to reality. He nursed for 21 months and is still getting ~12 oz frozen milk daily, it is just we had weird coincidences since he self weaned (for example the week after he had a very bad reaction to yeast which is super rare), but I know they are just really coincidences. Thanks again for the tip.

@Anbanan15: We have this one http://www.amazon.com/Braun-Thermoscan-Thermometer-Technology-IRT4520USSM/dp/B001FWXKMM . It is the same one used at our pediatrician's. We've had it for about three years and it is still working well, and I like it. Lowly still doesn't love getting her temperature taken, but it is fast, and seems pretty accurate, so at least we aren't taking our sweet time and "torturing" her. And, again, don't feel guilt. I bet all these things would have happened even if you were still nursing, and clearly you put lots of time and effort into that relationship and he has gotten countless benefits from all the milk he's gotten. I agree that it's just coincidence. I'd keep him home with me, but I can totally understand if that's not an option; he's fortunate to have a family member he can be with if he can't be with you considering he's not feeling well. Good luck. I would call the doctor, but not necessarily go in. It's very likely that there's nothing they can treat at this point (but please do call, in case there's something here I'm missing; the doctor or nurses will be conservative and tell you to come in if there's any whiff of something not right), and they may well just tell you to layer tylenol and ibuprofen to drop the fever down to a safer level if they think it's getting too high. http://keepyourchildsafe.org/aspwpadmin/stattrack/includes/dltrack.asp?Title=brieffever.PDF&File=brieffever.PDF please see this as it came from a reputable source. I'm guessing based on your description his fever is not dangerously high and he is not showing other worrisome symptoms, so I would call for peace of mind, but if they agree that just waiting it out and possibly treating the fever if you or they are concerned about how high it is getting then you've saved yourself (and your son!) a trip.

@MsLipGloss: Thank you! I just called and they want to see him in an hour (the appointment is with my least favorite pedi in the practice but that is all they had).

@Monkula: Thanks for the info! I talked to my husband and he wants me to take him in since he has had an ongoing hoarse voice since late January that his allergist and GI thought was reflux related. Now that he has a fever we just want it all checked to be on the safe side. I'll stop off to get that thermometer too! It is like torture with the other ones. Thanks again.

@MsLipGloss: thanks for checking! At this point she is thinking virus but if the fever doesn't go under 101.0 by Sat am they want to check for UTI. She is also concerned about his hoarse voice, choking/coughing when eating, refusing to eat, and lack of weight gain since January and wants him scoped by GI, checking for EE. She tried to get his appointment we already have scheduled bumped up from mid-April but they do not have an opening so we are in the waiting list.
