A message from Ed Hart, President and CEO

As President & CEO of Kentucky Kingdom, it is my responsibility to set policy which is in the best interest of all our guests. To that end, I want to make it absolutely clear that Kentucky Kingdom totally supports the benefits that accrue to mother and child from breastfeeding. We have absolutely no restrictions on breastfeeding at the park, and will leave it up to mom to determine and know, when and where she desires to breastfeed – whether publicly or privately (in the several buildings available for that purpose). Regarding displaying “discretion,” we will leave it up to mom to make that determination and in no way will our staff interfere with mom’s decision. We have instructed our staff accordingly. I am sorry for any confusion this issue has caused, and I personally apologize if we have offended anyone.

    Ed Hart

@avivoca: Good update, but some of the comments below still really boil my blood. Sometimes I get very, very frustrated with the backwardness of our country and the fact that I can't do too much to change it (or change it fast enough).

I wish I had $$$$$ because I would totally form a special interest group and create massive public campaigns to say that breasts are made for feeding babies--if you want to use them for other things--great! But don't forget the original, intended use. Stop acting like feeding a baby is shameful. Stop being so puritanical in general. God is not against breastfeeding--Jesus wouldn't be against it either. There is not 1 major religion in the world that would be against breastfeeding a baby who is hungry. Aughhh

@Anagram: Oh man, I would join you in that special interest group! I think between everyone who has a stake in this, someone has to have services that they would be willing to donate to the cause. I'm looking for opportunities in my community to use my PR background to normalize breastfeeding (and really ALL feeding of infants, since there seems to be a backlash against formula feeding moms).

I can't even comprehend asking someone to leave who's nursing using a cover. Are there people that are so uptight that even if no body part is being exposed, the act of breastfeeding must be hidden away? In a public freaking bathroom? Ugh, if anyone asked me to BF in a bathroom I'd ask them if they'd like to hang out in there and out their own lunch.

@avivoca: @Anagram: there is a group here in SD called the Nursing in Public Task Force ... They have pamphlets explaining laws and have staged several nurse ins in situations like the one in this post. I know that they have made a huge difference in the new mom community in regards to feeling comfortable and supported! I guess that's my long winded way of saying you should do it!!

Regarding the original topic .... People enrage me. They make things all about them and their comfort level and completely fail to see that it's simply a mother feeding her child. So frustrating!!

@avivoca: I am glad he said something - he needed to do some MAJOR damage control, though the damage is already done. I've been keeping up with the FB comments and some of them are outrageous. I think my favorite is that "breastfeeding is trifling". Also the guy who doesn't understand why anyone wouldn't want to se boobies and offered to protect any mom who wants to breastfeed in public.

Haven't read all the responses but this just shocks me. I can understand it making some people uncomfortable without a cover, but even then I'd be surprised if the mom was told to go elsewhere. Who the hell wants to be in a amusement park bathroom at all, much less to nurse? If they want to take this policy, they should be required to have multiple comfortable, clean places for mothers to nurse babies located throughout the park. I just don't get why such a big deal is made of nursing! So insane.

I'm glad the CEO made a statement in support. That's really shocking she was asked to go to the bathroom.

I also nursed everywhere with and without a cover, and never got any harassment. Actually, one time I felt uncomfortable because I was nursing my newborn and one of my cousins lifted up the cover and pointed to the baby nursing and said, "Look, (her son's name, seven year old boy), that's how babies eat."
