I was wondering of different babbling sounds and consonants come and go?
I was watching some videos of LO when he was around 9/9.5 months, and he was babbling a lot-dada, mama, gaba, baba, nana sounds were all there.
But now, at 11.5 months, he doesn't use most of those sounds, he mostly squeals, grunts, vibrates his lips, screams, etc. Every once in a while, he will say BA or GA, but not the continuous babbling.
Cause for concern?

I was actually wondering the same thing. Xander at 7 or 8 months used to do the "ba ba ba blah" babble all the time, but now he doesn't make any "ba" sounds. We've been trying to get him to say block or box or ball because he plays with those things a lot and he just doesn't do it! I can't even remember the last time he made a "ba" sound...

@Adira: interesting! I wonder if it's specific sounds or a particular way of communication or...?

@MoonMoon: I also wonder if maybe they just lose interest. Like "Okay, I mastered this ba sound, I'm going to work on something else now..." But I really have no idea. I'll try to remember to bring it up at our pediatrician appointment in a couple weeks!

I don't think it's a cause for concern - L was the same way! She went from babbling all the consonants, to mostly just babbling dadadadadada. She was/is a REALLY late talker, so that may be connected somehow! Didn't get her first word until 13-14 months (I'm starting to forget already, aaahhh!!!), and now at 16 months doesn't even have 10 words.

I am not familiar with losing consonants but when we had DD evaluated by EI the 1st they noticed was that although she wasn't talking she was using Ba, Ma, Pa, Da and that words would follow....and they did!
So, consonants are important to learning how to talk - I would mention it to your ped

@swurlygurl: glad to hear your perspective, that you had a similar experience! LO seems like he might take his time speaking as well.
@Mamaof2: will definitely mention it to the pediatrician. I'm assuming at the one-year visit she might ask how many words he says, and he doesn't say any.

Definitely mention it to your ped and consider EI if its still and issue between 12-18 months. My ped was never provy pr concerned about my son and he is in EI nowI don't think you should worry because this doesn't necessarily mean one thing or another but early speech therapy can help and won't hurt any child.

A friend of mine mentioned this with her baby. He went from babbling really well to then becoming very quiet. Then all of a sudden one day he rolled himself over for the first time. She was saying that babies can only learn one thing at a time, so they sort of turn off one thing to learn another. Her son went back to babbling after that. I'm not sure if she's right on this, but it sounds probable to me.

@PixieStix: that is interesting! My LO crawled, then cruised, and is now walking, all that happened in the space of a few weeks! Maybe now that he's walking really well, he'll revisit his babbles, haha.

My LO moves in definite phases with his babbling - he was all about mamama and dadadada for awhile, but now he mostly says noonoo and baba and yiayia. And he's 14 months! I am going to mention it again to the pedi at his 15 month appointment, but at his 12 month appt she said it was normal (especially for boys) to move in waves with babbling and not to really start with words until up to 18 months.

haha my son is 27 months and alternates between using real words and just senseless babble. I admit I LOVE it. He talks great and communicates very well, but sometimes will still just babble because.

I would guess its a phase? My 14 mo used to babble a lot but lately its mostly whining. His receptive communication has improved though

@Mrs. Pen: I love his funny sounds too! Lately he does this singsong high-pitched thing that is so cute/weird!
@silver1: oh yes, my LO definitely understands more and more now. It's so cool, I'll say ”give me that”, or ”are you hungry” or ”do you want to read” and he totally responds.

I remember my son doing this. He would babble certain sounds for awhile, then drop them and babble new sounds later. I think it's normal and at 3, my son never stops talking!

@MoonMoon: My LO has done this as well! She was all about the babababa from around 6-8.5 months, then she introduced a mumum sound. A few days later she said dada - for just one evening - then, the next day, dada disappeared. A few days after that, mumum disappeared. Then she stopped babbling altogether, preferring squeals and grunts. Weird. Babies are just strange!
@PixieStix: That makes so much sense in relation to our situation because E has been working really hard on crawling over the last few weeks. I wonder if that's why she isn't using her sounds?

@Cherrybee: it feels so reassuring to know that this is something many other LOs go through! I was afraid to hear that all other babies would only add to their sounds, never subtract, but it seems meandering can be normal/ok too!
