Anyone have experience with a young widow and their young child? Any suggestions for ways to offer support, send well wishes, etc?

This is terrible. I have no experience but I can imagine bringing meals or groceries would always be appreciated under any circumstance. I'm so sorry for whoever you know is going through this.

My very good friend lost her husband a month before their first child was born (cancer).
There were a lot of times she just needed to be alone and cry and have someone else watch the baby. Bringing meals was good too.
This happened right around tax season and I filed an extension for her. I also organized her mail for her (threw away the junk and put the bills on an empty corner of the counter). She had a dog that her inlaws took for about 6 months too so that she didn't have to deal with that on top of everything.
It has been 1.5 years since he passed and their son is 18 months old now. I try to remember to send her flowers on her birthday, Valentines Day, and their anniversary and let her know I'm there for her.

A friend from college lost her husband when her son was very young (less than a year). A friend of the family set up a college fund for her son, and its my understanding that they received a lot of donations and its been a real comfort for her to know she won't have to worry about paying for college. Setting up something like that would be another way to help (and involve people that aren't local but want to do something tangible).
I think offering help to babysit, drop off meals, bringing her a cup of coffee, and just being there are all great ways to help.
