I think a lot of people might miss this part: "That is, sharing and caring works; smothering does not." lol. I saw first hand that smothering does not do any good!

Love this!!
Though this line definitely stood out to me: "There is one place where a tight mother-son bond could come at a disadvantage: Once the mama's boy marries." My best friend dated a mama's boy and the relationship between the boy and his mother really affected their relationship - he often listened to his mom's opinions over my friend, even after they had been dating for YEARS. I think one of the reasons my relationship with my husband is so strong is because I'm FIRST to him, over his mother.
I want to have a Mama's Boy while he's growing up, but I do want him to make the healthy transition to value his spouse over me when the time comes! (Although still call me on Mother's Day and my birthday, please!)

@Adira: me too. I definitely want him to feel free to choose someone whom he feels is right for him without my approval and I don't want him to feel that he is gods gift to women. I feel like boys are forced into a more macho idea though often and I don't want that. It's a balancing act like all things.

@MrsMccarthy: Definitely a balancing act!! But I feel like while they are this little, it's totally okay that they are all Mama's Boys all the time!
I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts and hope that as he grows older and becomes more independent, our relationship just changes and adjusts accordingly. I won't push him away, but I also won't try to hold on too tight (I hope).

@MrsMccarthy: Oh i believe it!!!! Now, pass the memo to my mother, eh?
@Adira: I think if you, as the parent, lay that out as the expectation, your child will understand that. It's when moms get all butt hurt that they drop in ranking that problem happen. You know, the whole "no woman is good enough for my precious boy" thing

@blackbird: Yes! That's exactly what I want to avoid!!! I want to have a close enough relationship with my boys that they'll miss me when we don't see each other for a while and will call me on my birthday, but I definitely don't want to interfere with their relationships! Hopefully as long as I keep this perspective in mind, it'll all work out.

I feel sorry for my future DIL - my DS told me that he is never moving out - I told him I didn't think his wife would want to live with me - he said "Its ok mommy, my bed can fit 2 people"

@blackbird: ugh mine too! And I've also dated guys who were worshiped by their mother and it was awful! Ill give my son a lot of affection and encourage him to talk about his emotions but I also expect a lot from him. I want him to learn to be respectful and treat anyone he dates or marries in the same way.
@Mamaof2: oh that is so adorable!! And yes a little frightening too. Hehehe
