This bothers me so much!!! It always makes things stressful for people who do show up for work!

Yeah. I figure they are doing it to extend their vacation if they don't show signs of being sick when they get back.

I'm not a manager, however, even if I DO feel sick right before or after a holiday, I still go to work because I don't want people thinking that I am trying to extend my holidays. Which really ends up sucking.

My mom's company requires a doctor's note if you are gone your first or last day before/after days off. This has dramatically cut down on the number of call-ins.

@MaisyMay: That makes so much sense! More businesses should adopt that policy.

I hate when people show up to work sick so I'm all for erring on the side of assuming they really are sick.

I'm not a manager, but it DOES drive me nuts because it leaves everyone else in a pinch.
That being said, I had all next week requested off (I requested it last May!) and tested positive for the flu on Wednesday and was told by my dr that I can't go to work for 10 days, soooo I was "that guy" BUT I'm actually sick

I agree, I'm not a manager either, but whenever someone does that, I automatically think they just want another vacation day or want to sleep in and recover from the vacation.

My husband's friend stopped by today and mentioned his wife (whom we can't stand) starting her lie today by calling him in front of coworkers and asking him to get meds because she was coming down with the flu. Her plan is to call in tomorrow to add to her vacation which is Sunday-Sunday. I can't stand the girl so I have half a mind to call her job and tell them.

Our employment law is set up so that if you don't show up for your shift before & after a holiday you don't get paid for that holiday.

Nah, unless I know they're lying to me - if you're truly sick, I do not want you coming in & spreading your germs. Especially not before a 4 day weekend

Wow I guess people do this a lot but I don't see much of it. I do know people that request and extra day off after their vacation but its planned ahead so nbd

I've had jobs too where if you called off "sick" the day before or after the holiday, you didn't get paid for the holiday. I thought that was a fair policy.

I used to get sick after we'd come back from visiting DH's family across the country. I guess a combination of jet-lag, different weather, etc. But I'd always go in with my box of Kleenex.
It's gotten much better now that our time off is much longer. We used to go over the course of 4-5 days, now it's that we spend 4-5 days there but have a day or 2 to recover once we get back.
