If you were pregnant in winter months, and live where it gets cold for an extended period of time, did you purchase a maternity coat? How many? Or, did you just tough it out with layers and being hot from being pregnant?

I sucked it up and purchased a wool maternity coat from Motherhood. I also purchased a puffy coat with an elastic waist (by Tahari) as well. Winters here are brutal and I couldn't last without a coat that fit over my belly.

@citymouse: Didn't buy a new one but I had a puffer coat that was relatively big on me and my bump did not get huge. And I live somewhere that's mainly car to door.

I got lucky and found a sturdy non-maternity peacoat at my local thrift store for $7.50. I usually wear an XS and this was a M, with a slightly higher waist that gave me room for my bump, and the sleeves/shoulders weren't so big as to be totally awkward-looking. LO was born in December and this coat got me through early winter in Chicago.

I was in my 1st and 2nd trimester during the winter months so my belly was able to be tucked away in my normal winter jackets.

I wore a super huge NFL sweatshirt of DH's that his mom bought him forever ago, because she thought it was the style to wear things baggy, lol. It ended up being really useful for me!

I was lucky that I didn't really pop until the worst of the winter was over. So I wore my regular coat up until Feb/16 weeks or so, then I had a lighter, but still wool, loose coat that I could keep buttoning until winter coat season was over. Then, by pure luck, my sister had a medium weight coat that had a big pleat in the back so it still zips over my 32 week belly.

i was in my third trimester during the winter and bought a maternity coat from old navy.

I didn't buy one. I was so hot while pregnant that I wore a fleece zip up the whole winter, and that was enough for me.

I had a huge bump, in Canada, delivered in January. I bought a maternity coat on clearance right after getting my bfp. It didn't close around my belly after 36 weeks. At the end I bought an XL regular coat. The XL coat ended up being great for baby wearing, I could wear it around us both..

I was huge and gave birth in November. I bought a lighter weight hooded maternity coat that was in clearance from target in march and either wore that with layers or wore my normal coat and just didn't zip it.

I was due in April but it's very cold here in January and February. I wore a men's North Face jacket that was plenty roomy. My regular ski jacket also fit until march. At the end, i couldn't zip either up, but I also started parking super close to the doors to work (visitor parking) and didn't have long to go. I also ran super warm. I couldn't justify an $80 coat that I might truly need only a couple of times. I wore gloves and scarves and sweaters, though!

I wore DH's North Face puffy, but since I was due in December (Chicago), I figured I'd only need the maternity coat for a short while. I looked at renting one from Mine for Nine, which might be another option. They rent by the month, so if you only need it for a short period, it might be more cost effective. My regular coats fit within the first week after LO's birth.

I bought a wool one from Motherhood but I mainly just wore big wool sweaters that I could belt. I ran so hot during pregnancy - I liked being able to easily take it on and off.

I got a wool pea coat from Motherhood for Christmas, when I was about 13 weeks along. I wore my pre-pregnancy coats up until then, but enjoyed the maternity one January-early April.

Old Navy! They had a crazy good sale during early fall, so I bought one of their maternity pea coats. It was really nice, I'd go that route again.

I just bought one on clearance at kohls for this winter. 30 bucks!

I had a J.Crew wool trench style coat that was a little big on me pre-baby, and I was able to belt it right until the end (Dec. 29 baby). But the last few months I felt like I was always extra warm from being pregnant that I didn't need to buy a maternity-specific winter coat and didn't get that cold.

I had a wool swing coat (a-line) that I'd had for years that fit over top, but LO was born the first week of December, so I missed the really cold weather.

I had a long puffy jacket from Zara that worked very well. I only needed it until about 28 weeks, however. I don't think it would have fit well after that!

I have a huge Carhartt coat that I wore through my last pregnancy. Baby came the end of February, in the middle of a pretty severe North Dakota winter. The coat wouldn't zip over my belly, but I just wore huge hoodies and sweaters underneath and didn't spend a lot of time outside.

I REFUSED to purchase a maternity coat, so I got myself to TJMaxx and spent $25 on a size 2XX jacket that lasted me through the pregnancy and I also used it in the winter when babywearing.
I gave birth in December, in the mountains.

@looch: Did you feel like the arms or other parts of the coat were too big?
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@citymouse: kind of. The sleeves were long, so I rolled them up. It was a reversable jacket, so the inside was fleece and the outside was water resistant, so it looked intentional.
I remember standing in the store with my husband, and I couldn't get the size 18 to close and he was just trying to be sympathetic, lol. I was a size 10 prepregnancy, so I know I looked comical, but I embraced it!

I bought an old Navy Maternity Coat. I got it around thanksgiving online so it was marked down. I needed a coat as I walk several blocks and wait outside for public transit. It was about $75 I think might have even been closer to $50. It was sort of dressy. For causal stuff I wore a fleece jacket that belongs to the hubs.

@MrsH: Ahh, I really wish I were pregnant NOW because that coat is an awesome deal!! If we're lucky this cycle, I might buy it anyways... A March due date means I'll likely need one anyways!

I was already wearing a regular peacoat, so I ended up just not buttoning the last button when my bump got too big.

@MrsH: thanks for the link!! I'm due late January. I think I'll buy this.

Target. Like $35. I refused to spend a lot on something I'd only wear a couple of months. It was so comfy though!

@LindsayInNY: it's so cute on that i will be wearing it even if I'm not KU.
