I'm due in April and live in Canada... so definitely will need a heavy duty coat to get me through January/February/March! My mother in law has kindly offered to buy me a winter coat as my Christmas gift! wooo!
Any suggestions on where to get a cute/affordable winter maternity coat? I'm willing to go to the US if there are good options there!

I was due this past April, I know what you mean about needing a good coat! I had SO much trouble finding one, I wanted to try it on in stores but the selection was awful everywhere I looked. I ended up with one similar to this (http://www.apeainthepod.com/Product.asp?Product_Id=162820070&MasterCategory_Id=MC8); that looks about the same though mine had a faux fur trim on the hood. It was pretty good, though not as warm as my non-maternity puffy coat.
Btw, everyone always says that when you're pregnant you run hot and won't need a coat, but I was freezing all winter and was so happy to have a good coat!

@nana87: ya everyone keeps telling me that but i am ALWAYS freezing so i can't imagine that changing too much with pregnancy. i agree, it's so frustrating not being able to try anything on! the only place i've seen coats in stores is old navy and i don't love them. that pea in the pod one is really nice though! thanks!

Evymama has a great selection of maternity coats. I have the Mcoat which converts to a baby wearing coat post partum. I love it!
They also have a new one that is down and fur.... Looks awesome.I have a Fjallraven cape that isn't maternity but easily fits over my 31 week bump. I get compliments on it constantly.

I sized way up in a regular coat...I agree you need something, but I wasn't prepared to spend a lot of money on a maternity coat.

@looch: @Adira: I already wear a Large or Xlarge in most things so sizing up doesn't seem to be a good option for me unfortunately

Also last year at the baby time show they were there for $300 no hst.
I'm having my second January baby next year and last time out grew the Gap maternity coat I had purchased.

@loki: Yeah, I'd look into plus size. My friend wears a large/XL and she just bought a 2XL winter coat for her pregnancy. Just seems like maternity coats are soooooo expensive, so buying a regular coat in a size or two up is more affordable!

I bought a large mens coat from Old Navy - it was super warm and now DH wears it when snow blowing!
It was my last baby and I didn't want to spend much on a coat to wear for a few months -
@loki: haha, yeah, I hear you! My friend was going to buy a men's jacket because she figured that would be even bigger, but she tried some on and said the arms were too long. I guess the 2XL she bought seemed like a decent fit, just big?? I didn't ask her all the details.
The jacket I have is one I already own - it was a gift and too large, but not like overly huge. The arms actually seem mostly normal to me because it's a puffy jacket. It just had extra space in the midsection. And it ended up being a tight fit with my huge belly, but it still zipped!! I'm hoping it still fits this winter because I think I'm even bigger this time around.

i found a used one on old navy. i think gap had some nice warm looking ones as well--a little pricier but i bet you could find one used!

I just bought a black belted puffer coat from Motherhood Maternity in the US. Totally basic, but will do the trick. It was $90.

Bumping! I ordered a maternity pea coat from old navy for $50 (didn't have in stores for me to try on). Well, it came yesterday and is completely ill-fitting. Anymore suggestions!

@dc yoga bee: I actually found a normal coat in a bigger size at JC Penney that was on sale for $20 instead of $100. I basically went into the store looking for the cheapest non hideous coat that can get me through the next few months and that I won't feel bad about not using again after this.
It does look a little silly because I only button the top button, but I don't really mind not being trendy at this point!

@loki: This isn't for the super freezing days, but I had a swing coat like this one from Old Navy. The buttons are all up top and the bottom is open so it was perfect for a growing belly and I can still wear it now.

@sarac: I tried this one on, and was going to buy it until the zipper got stuck. Thinking it was a dud, I tried another and the zipper was stuck and wouldn't go up. I passed. Maybe ours were a bad shipment!

I second the M coat. I love it, especially because i wear all the time even when not pregnant or babywearing, so it was worth the investment for me. It is pricey, but i think a bit cheaper online or you can search for secondhand ones. A big bonus are the huge pockets - so great when you are wearing the baby and don't want to carry anything, it fits my phone, wallet and a few other items
or i totally would!
