Does the photography offer a CD release option?

$450 for 4 sessions is around $110 for each session fee which I would say is average.

I paid $150 for the NB session fee and had to buy at least $150 in prints - when a 5x7 is $25 it adds up really quick!

Looking back though it was worth every penny!

Her digital copies were $100 each - ouch - I didn't get any of those

I paid $450 for my maternity session and got all my images, about 60-70 of them. Same for our newborn shoot.

We end up spending about $1k a session not including the price of just the shoot. Photography is expensive. It also depend on where you live and what photographer you use. We live on very expensive area so it's just the going rate here.

@loki: those print prices seem insane! I would keep looking and see if you can find someone who will include a cd of all images.

I value a photographer's time, but I never hire one that doesn't give a DVD of images (or downloads) as part of the package. We hired a photographer for maternity + newborn photos and it cost $400, including all high-res images. I think she under-priced herself though!

Those print prices are a little crazy! But I will say pictures are invaluable.

I paid $400 for a package that included maternity, hospital, newborn, 3-6-9-12 months photos. I get all the edited images on discs. She was just starting out at the time. She now charges $800 for the same package. I will pay $800 for my next child. I love having all the pictures of T.

@Mrs.Someone: most in my area don't include the disk of images. Prints is how they make their money. So you have to spend so much to get the disk. Or you can buy the disk for $400+

personally I would keep looking, at least in our area the majority of photographers have moved to releasing the rights of pictures on a disc included in the session price. this is a necessity for me, I want to be able to print my own prints and canvas.

I don't do photogs that require you to buy digital images or prints through them...it just gets to be way too expensive! We paid $150 for each session (maternity, newborn, 1 year) and that includes a disk with images. Then we can print as many or as few as we want, and we don't have to print through the photog.

I specifically chose a photographer that gave me all the edited images and where I didn't have to buy prints from her. Newborn session was $300. Then I order my prints from mpix. Much cheaper!

I get she needs to make money, but those prices seem insane, and getting a disc with all my images is always a must for me. If I were you I would look around for other options.

We have paid between $200-$350 per shoot (didn't do a package) but have gotten the disk included so that we could print our own images. I agree with everyone that a) look until you find a photographer who offers a package in your price range - it may take awhile but you will find it and b) ensure that you get the disk of images (all or at least 30) included. We often print our images through Walgreens online and they come out perfect for less than $1 a photo...so it saves you a lot more money in the long run not to purchase the photo printing through your photog.
