We used them!

My city (Chicago) already has a ban on them as well, but then again, it's the nanny state in lots of ways

I use them and like them. I don't know how I feel about this!
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
Wow...they must pose an even bigger risk than I thought if states are going to ban the sale of them!
GOLD / pomelo / 5737 posts
We did too. In fact today is day #1 without them and this is our third or fourth go at getting rid of them. But LO pulled up for the first time today and is interested in playing with them recently so we are trying again. Everything's dangerous.

I used them for a few weeks until LO started to pull up on them. This is insaaaaaane and too far.

Wahoo! I use a breathable one (which are not banned). I have big fluffy bumpers; they look very dangerous to me.
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
I have a breathable mesh one, and a "normal" one in the closet. I planned to just stick with the mesh one..but holy cow.

I think it's a bit ridiculous. I plan on using a breathable bumper for my children.

I took ours off for a while and DS kept getting his leg/arms stuck in the slats and he would wake up...so back on they went.

@rattles: You can still buy breathable and regular bumpers in Chicago. I saw the breathable ones at my Target. I haven't checked City Target, but I'm pretty sure that they have them.

I think the government needs to stay the eff out of it. Leave it up to the judgement of the parents.

Bumpers have been good to us! We use the non-breathable ones. DS kept wedging his head onto the sides and corner of the crib, which would wake him up. Now if we took them off, I'm fairly certain he would start chewing on the slats. I also like being able to sneak into the room without him seeing me! Win!

I'm also in Chicago and when we took the CPR class at Northwestern, the nurse talked about how they are also banned in the city. And if we ever saw them sold, we should call and report the store. I honestly can't remember where we were supposed to call. Regardless, DS has slept in a pack n play since we have a tiny place. We are moving to a house soon and I plan on putting up some sort of something.
Has anyone used the full coverage mesh liner? He likes to wedge himself into a corner. I feel like he'll have an issue when he's in an actual crib and not the pnp.

@cascademom: You can find them bring illegally sold sometimes, but as @MUI831 says, technically you're supposed to call 311 to report them. The city ordinance banning them has been in effect since September 2011. I personally don't think they've been proven harmful enough to warrant superseding parental judgment, but that's just my two cents.

I, for one, am glad for the bans. They don't prevent injury. Only cause it.

@Mrs. Jacks: agreed, but I'm Canadian and I also agree with the walker ban here.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@Mrsjets: I've seen a baby go from being perfect and vibrant to completely non-functional from a walker. They should be banned!
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
@Mrs. Jacks: @Mrsjets: Wow I didn't realize there was problem with walkers! E has one, but he only ever uses it out on the deck when I'm watering our vegetables, usually <5 minutes at a time.
As for bumpers, we never even bought them.

@FutureMrsMcK: Babies can scoot right over to stairs and then fall down them in the walker which becomes a death trap as they fall
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@Mrs. Jacks: @Mrsjets: isn't that referring to the walkers that you put baby in? Not the push along carts, right?
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@Mrs. Pen: Walkers with wheels that your baby sits in and propel.
GOLD / pomelo / 5737 posts
@FutureMrsMcK: I don't think they're all that bad. My mom says I loved mine. The problem is when the baby can get to a non-baby proofed environment. The problem is non-attentive parents, and that doesn't require a walker! Just my 2 cents!
pear / 1699 posts
@Mrs. Pen: oh yeah just the sit in ones. J has push toys. But it's just my preference, no judgement .
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@Mrsjets: @Mrs. Jacks: oh yeah I had heard those kinds were bad for baby development anyway. J was in one once when someone was watching him at their house and they had one. But yeah, I avoided those too. Scary about the stairs!!

@rattles: Hmm, interesting, but not surprising with the city. I don't remember our Northwestern CPR nurse talking about the ban or not. We really liked our nurse for that class too, probably since we took it first, and the other classes seemed so so after that.
grapefruit / 4903 posts
@cascademom: You must have had a different nurse than we did. The CPR instructor was our least favorite. She was well-intentioned, but you could just tell she didn't have kids of her own. When discussing how SIDS generally happens between 3-6 months, she said something about how it wasn't as bad if it was earlier since you hadn't really gotten to know the baby yet! Um, what?

@Weagle: haha, I know! The best part was one of the dads-to-be was nodding along like that made sense to him! His wife looked appalled and elbowed him.

They just aren't worth the risk to me. I have no problem with the ban.
pomegranate / 3225 posts
I think they should be banned... @Mrs. Jacks: my little brother fell down the stairs in a walker. Luckily he wasn't seriously injured at the time, but my parents have always worried about it ever since...
pomegranate / 3003 posts
We opted out of bumpers, even though they look adorable. With the associated risks, it was 100 PB dollars I didn't need to spend.
grapefruit / 4731 posts
@matador84: @Weagle: Similar thing happened to us! We were gifted our non-breathable bumpers and had it set up in the crib before LO was born... when we finally put LO in the crib to sleep when he was 5 months old... we took them off but he would wiggle around so much and get his little legs in the bars we decided to put them back. I think after reading this thread though... I'll take them down again.
