There's an offer on my state's sell and swap group for a Medela Dual Electric Breast Pump, used for 4 weeks, with tons of things included that are unopened: "Comes with shields, valves, 3 nursing bras, nursing pads, storage bags new in box. Lanoish cream and more. $100. Was used for 4 weeks."
How hard would it be to sterilize or replace certain parts? Is this worth it? I was just going to register for/buy a manual handheld based on cost..but I'm a novice with pumps so should I jump on this??

I would. I have a Medela double pump, and Ive let friends use it with their own parts (at work, she was here on business from Brazil.). If youre totally creeped out by it, you can easily buy the replacement pumping parts and bottles for pretty cheap. You can also drop them in a pot of boiling water for ten minutes, or use a steam sterilizer.
Me personally, Id probably take the offer and buy a new parts assembly. What model is it?

oh and if you plan to pump often, you need a double electric IMO. Manuals are for emergencies or occasional pumping. Im going on 9.5 months and I wouldnt still be doing this w/o a DE pump

its blocked at my work. But if its the PIS or the PISA, the replacement parts kit is pretty cheap. Worth it to save the cost of the pump itself. I personally wouldnt replace the tubing. Ive never had milk get into my tubes ever. Id maybe juse wash them tehn flush with rubbing alcohol (be careful sterilizing them, they will turn white for awhile because of the PVC)

You can't sterilize Medela pumps except the hospital grade ones. New parts aren't enough... gunk can grow inside where you can't reach. Go for a new one, a used or rented hospital grade one or a Hygeia.

hmm..I passed on it for now. we don't have a ton of extra cash and I was just too undecided, and there were other mamas inquiring so I felt like the best thing to do was let them if they were sure.
but a side note - if BFing DOES work out - you think that electric is easier/better? yikes, so much money, haha!

@sorrycharlie: An electric is absolutely mecessary if you plan on going back to work or pumping regularly or frequently. Its a lot of money, but its worth it. You will get more output in half the time and your supply will be maintained with an electric. Speaking of, its time for me to go pump...
Also, @sloaneandpuffy: was right when she said that gunk can get in the machine. I had mine serviced (a store near me was doing it for free) and they took it all apart, and after 9 months of use, there wasnt anything inside of mine. That being said, it CAN happen, and it probably does. Medela has to say that on their site becaue it isnt a closed system. Id follow her advice and look into renting a hospital grade one or buying a sued closed system like a Hygeia.

@sorrycharlie: I used my SIL's pump until it died and just replaced the parts. I know it says that only one person should use it, but the lactation consultant said that it's usually just fine to use someone elses.
