We haven't announced our name for baby boy yet (he's set to arrive in December), but my MIL keeps making comments about how she already picked out his name and will call him by that name even if it's different from what we have chosen. She said that to me when she was here for my shower in October, and just now in an e-mail she said it again. I know that the name she "chose" is not the one we did because she told me what letter it starts with. I know that my hormones are heightening my emotions on this, but I just want to scream at her! Do I just keep my mouth shut or tell her to stop being ridiculous? They live in NJ and we are in FL so it's not like she'll see him all the time and call him by "her name." I'm just mad and think she's being rude!

So sorry! My MIL also threatened to call LO the name she liked but it was a non factor after LO was born!
I hope your MIL is just being silly but I would wait until your LO is born. Just correct her if it ever happens! good luck!

@lawbee11: agreed! And I'm trying really hard to not freak out at her because they are the only family I have. I don't speak to my side of the family (they are about 1000x crazier.) I'm doing a deep breathing exercise right now lol

That's super ridiculous and annoying, but I'm sure she will actually LO by their name once it is announced. I mean, you look like a complete loon if you call your grandchild the wrong name! I'd ignore it for now, I guess.

My MIL called Wagon Jr. by a different name for a while. It really pissed me off but I didn't say anything because it was a delicate situation. (basically she chose two korean names but was leaning towards one that started with J... at the same time, her ex husband gave us a korean name based on the traditional naming standard of their family that was the SAME has her other choice, starting with S, so we chose that one... all of a sudden she hated the S name and called him the J name instead...)
Eventually she stopped because I think it was embarrassing for her in front of others, especially my parents, to refer to the baby as a name that wasn't actually his name!

I have never heard of anything quite so crazy! I'm sorry that you're dealing with this at a time when you really don't need any extra stress, but here's hoping she comes around. Like @mrs. wagon said, if she persists in doing this she is the one who will end up looking like a fool.

People be crazy! My FIL was set on us using a specific name. When we decided on something different he pouted a bit. He did the same thing with my SIL and she even named her son after him.

That is so weird!!!! Hopefully she'll be like Mrs. Wagon's MIL and just drop it eventually because she's calling your LO by the wrong name and people will notice so it'd be kind of embarrassing for her.

I also suggest ignoring her. If she tries it after he's born, ask your DH to correct her.

I told DH that I would start calling him and his brother by different names because I think the ones she came up with are stupid (I don't really think that but I just want to get back at her!) @alayaya: I'm about to call her by several different names right now but I don't think they would be appropriate for the message boards. Oh, and she also told me "don't name your baby xxxx, because my friend down the street has a dog by that name and I refuse to call my grandson by a dog's name." Go figure, that name was #2 on our list.

So weird! If my MIL or mom said that, I cannot even imagine what I would say or do. I guess I would just wait until the baby is born and see whether she follows through with that.

What the?? That's weird! Well, i don't think it's gonna matter once you officially name your LO. It'll make her look silly calling your LO a name while everyone else calls her something different.

Apparently my mom said this to my sister when she was pregnant!! Crazy, but she never actually did that.

If possible, just ignore her for now. When LO is here, if she does try to call him by a different name, correct her the first time or two but after that tell her that if she can't call him by his name, she doesn't need to be around him. Use the excuse of not confusing him or something.

I hope she's not being serious! I'd ignore it for now, but definitely say something if she follows through. We (DH & I) teased MIL about calling her something other than the name she wanted. She said shed call DS by an unwanted nickname if we did. It was all in good fun though, and no one is being called the wrong name.
