Only if I know who it is! My family never leaves VM, so I just call them back.
If I don't know who it is, I never call back.

@Mrs. Pen: my DH always calls back - I feel like if it was important they would have left a message, so no message? No return call
pear / 1809 posts
Probably not. I'm not a big phone talker, and I would assume if there was no voicemail that they had nothing important to say.

Always. I never leave voivemails because I assume the person will see the missed call from me and call me back. I HATE VOICEMAIL WITH A PASSION.

Most times yes. Or if I don't know who it is sometimes I'll google the number first. It helps that I have a California number and live in Louisiana, so if it's a Louisiana number I know it likely wasn't a wrong number.

My SIL just called me - she NEVER calls me - but no message.
I figure she will call me back later or leave a vm next time

If I know the person and they haven't, since, text me. Yes.
If I don't know the person/number. No.

@.twist.: DH calls back unknown numbers and is like "Who is this??? You just called me"

Only if they leave a voicemail. If it is important they will call back.

@Mamaof2: hahah!!! He is much more curious than me!
I've had people call my phone and say "who are you? you just called." and I'm like "uh... no... no I didn't just call you!??!" And they INSIST that I did, in fact, call them. But I didn't. It's the most bizarre thing and has happened to me on multiple occasions!
pear / 1809 posts
@Mamaof2: My DH answers unknown numbers, and that's another thing I never do! If I don't know the person, I have no interest in talking to them. If they don't leave a voicemail, I assume it was a wrong number.
pomelo / 5258 posts
I would text the person if I wanted to talk to them. I have very few minutes on my phone plan though.
@.twist.: That happens to me at work. The way I understand it a call from my corporate office will go out with any random direct line from my office. So the CEO might call you but my number will show. My policy is to never pick up the phone at work. It has been nothing but trouble. Nobody trying to reach me would call my desk line anyway. The few time I've picked up the phone in 3.5 years I have immediately regretted it.

Nope. If it's important they will leave a VM or text or call back!
pear / 1593 posts
Nope! I avoid phone conversations other than DH as much as possible anyone who knows me knows a text is your best bet.
pomelo / 5607 posts
@.twist.: I had that for a while. Apparently it's possible to hack the caller id somehow to show a different number, and spammers do it. It was really weird/annoying, but it stopped after a while.
@Mamaof2: I'm with you. You don't leave a voicemail, I'm assuming it's not important.
pear / 1586 posts
If it is DH yes because he never leaves a message. Someone else I know? I will text them to see. This happened recently-a friend called but I missed the call. She never calls me- her partner always does so I figured it was a butt dial. A little while later my other friend (the partner) texts me the question. I told her just to leave a message next time lol.

Only if it's DH. Otherwise, if it was important, you would have left a vmail.
pear / 1510 posts
Nope. If it's important, they can leave a VM or send a text. I hate when people assume I'll call them back just because they called. Not going to. Also hate it when people call me be back before listening to a VM I just left. You didn't need to waste my time or yours if you'd just listen to the damn VM.
squash / 13208 posts
@BlueWolverine: haha - YES!! Again, something my DH does.
Did you call?
Yes, did you listen to my vmail?
No
Oh well hang up and listen it to!!
grrrr

I think it's funny that so many people on this thread are saying they assume someone will leave a vm if it's important, when on this old thread the consensus seemed to be that most people really dislike voicemail:
http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/do-you-listen-to-your-voicemails/page/2
Mr Bee even posted an article showing that vm use is declining rapidly.

Yes, if I know the person, because no one uses VM these days. However, if it is someone I do NOT want to talk to (SIL or MIL could sometimes fit into this category), then I won't, and if they say something I'll just say "Oh, whoops, you didn't leave a voicemail, I figured you'd call back!"
clementine / 903 posts
@Truth Bombs: Haha! I thought of that too, and I agree with you, hence my answer is that I would use voicemail as an excuse only if I did not really want to talk to the person and they called me out on not calling them back!
grapefruit / 4278 posts
Yea, I almost never leave voicemails and hate when someone leaves one for me just to say "call me back." Ugh, I had to call a number, type in my code, and delete the message just for "call me back?"
pear / 1580 posts
I would, since it's someone I know, especially since it's unusual that she called.
papaya / 10343 posts
Nope. People know how voicemail and texting work. If they choose not to leave a voicemail or text I assume it was a fleeting question and they don't need a callback.
nectarine / 2262 posts
Yes if it's someone I know, although the list of people I actually talk to (not text) on my cell phone is pretty short - mostly DH and my mom. Although even they (and certainly everyone else) text me if I don't pick up. And I do the same to them - because if I'm somewhere I can't talk on the phone/check a voicemail, I can probably read or send a quick text.
If it's an unknown number I wouldn't call back. Most numbers not in my phone would be like a doctor's office, CVS, something like that, and those places always leave a message.
Work phone is a different story. I just roll my eyes when I talk to a client who says "I tried to call you 5 times and you never called me back!" Well, did you leave me a voicemail? No? Well, that's why. I mean, really.
clementine / 911 posts
Without a voicemail or a text to follow-up, I assume they dialed me by accident or something.
pear / 1610 posts
If it's someone I know I call back... If it's an unknown number I won't call back... I am also one who hates to leave voicemails!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@BlueWolverine: Agree with you 100%!
Never call back if someone calls me and doesn't leave a message (unless I want to just chat with them anyway).
pineapple / 12566 posts
I never call back. I feel like people usually text/email a message if they don't get through, or it wasn't important.
