Did anyone see this? This is so bizarre and horrible! Not that there is necessarily anything wrong with circumcision but to be forced by a judge?? What the F???

Sounds to me like this poor child has no good advocates in his life. His father taking his mother to court over circumcision is obviously extreme. But his mother seems to want to use her son as a martyr for a cause "Hironimus and her supporters have made Chase an anti-circumcision poster boy, creating Internet memes featuring photos of him to get their message across, and using his image in placards at public rallies." I can't support the actions of either of these parents.

How can a judge force a non essential surgery?! That's insane to me.

ThIs Situation is so ridiculous and upsetting on so many different levels.

I think the issue is that the mom had previously agreed to the procedure is whatever parenting plan they had signed and has now changed her mind. So the court is really just enforcing their previous agreement, as opposed to randomly ordering a circumcision. For me, that makes it a little less crazy from a legal perspective, but it is still plenty crazy from a parenting perspective. I have no problem with circumcision, but there is no religious motivation here, so I'm having a really hard time understanding why the dad is pressing so hard for this. If there's a medica issue ok, but the kid is 4 - why not let it be and let him make his own decision when he's old enough?

@birdofafeather: @catomd00: @Greentea: Right?? And the fact that the kid is 4 and has all the capacity to understand what's going to happen to him is even more horrifying! Hopefully no doctor with perform it.

@Madison43: but it's an elective SURGERY! i think it would be one thing if it were an agreed upon plan on where the child would live or go to school or something, but to err on the side of an elective medical procedure is crazy to me!

Has anyone been keeping up with this? The case has been dropped and the mother is currently in jail still. I'm surprised no one has been talking about it!

@catomd00: I'm starting to see it back in my FB newsfeed, so I figured there was some update, but I didn't know what. It's so ridiculous/infuriating.

@Torchwood: it really is! I just recently learned that the agreement specified it be done in infancy and the father didn't get it done. I'm not sure if that is true why everyone is saying she signed it she needs to let it be done! Umm, she signed it for infancy not for him at 3 or 4 years old. As sick as it would be, I hope the father only did this to retaliate against the mother and won't go through with it. I hope no doctor will agree to it either. The mom has done all her research and taking a stand against it, the father wants it done because "that's what you do". Great research!

@catomd00: From what I've heard it's even swinging more towards uncircumcised here in the US, finally, so that's not even an accurate argument!

@Madison43: I agree with everything you posted.
I can see how this could happen legally (I've seen tons of nasty custody cases through my work), but as a parent it's an awful situation. This father needs to just back down regardless of what was agreed upon before when the child was an infant. He's 4 now and this is not necessary. This family will likely end up with a DCFS case (not necessarily to remove the child) due to the trauma and emotional abuse that both parents are causing. The child is too young now to understand, but may be really embarrassed later on when these pictures and memes about his penis and family drama live on forever on the Internet.

@Torchwood: I don't have a boy so I am less inclined to keep up with these things but I believe last I checked it was about 50/50 now. Definitely changing!

@ChelseaRose: couldn't agree more. I totally "get" how it became a legal battle with the agreement violation. But, if the agreement said it was to be done in infancy and the father didn't do it, then it's not really what was agreed upon anymore. Regardless, I don't know all the details so who knows if that is true. I do feel bad for the trauma this child is being put through. It's bound to effect him now and in the future.

There's an update. The mom gave in after being told she'd be in jail indefinitely until she did. And she's facing charges that could result in up to 5 years in prison. This whole things is so damn messed up.

I feel so bad for the child! To have either parent taken from you, live in a shelter, now have to go get the procedure, and possibly lose another parent to jail time, is just crazy! I look at my 2.5 year old son and just love how innocent his life is right now and can't imagine doing anything to take that from him.
