I was just talking about this with DH the other day! I would probably go with "penis", but I feel dirty saying it for some reason lol!

Penis!

When he is old enough to understand what mixed company is I will teach my little man to say "privates."

My parents always taught us to use the anatomically correct words. I remember my dad told a joke and said"family jewels" he had to explain what that meant to my brother and I.

We call it a peeny which is short for penis.

I would call it penis! I heard a tip that it was good to call it what it is rather than a cutesy name b/c if your kid all of a sudden starts calling it something different, you can ask them who taught them that. Child molesters will give it a cutesy name.

Penis. I'd feel weird calling it something else, and it's not weird to hear him say penis.

Speaking of penises, DS walked into my room this morning just as I was getting out of the shower and was like "Mommy, where's your penis??" and being generally concerned about its absence, like I'd lost one and should be equally distraught.

@mrs. mochi: My niece calls hers a "butt". Everything underwear would cover is her butt, I can't stand it either

He also likes to play "penis hide and seek" during diaper changes- after I get the old one off and before I get the new one on, he'll clap his legs together and announce "My penis is hiding!"

We're sticking with the anatomically correct terms, presented without shame or judgement. When he's older we can talk about privacy and all that, but at 2, that's really not on his radar

@yin: same here. I want to use the correct term, but DH thinks it's strange (?!) so we call it pee-pee.

We will use penis if we have a boy. I'm very in favor of using correct terminology from the beginning!

I'm totally calling it a penis but I have a harder time with girls because, frankly, it isn't all a vagina. It is a labia, a urethra, a vagina, etc. I don't want a daughter if mine to think she's peeing out of her vagina!

I think it is good to use anatomical names. For one it shows kids that it's no different than a nose or an ankle, for another it'll be a red flag if they start using a cutesy nickname-- which perpetrators tend to do.

We taught our 4 year old "penis", but he started calling it his "nakie" on his own. So that's what it is! Haha.

@mrbee: Really? Between diaper changes and bathtime and being really slow about potty training, I feel like I heard DS say the word "penis" at least twice a day.

@Lozza: I will listen more carefully. But it definitely doesn't come up once a day!

We haven't discussed this yet, but I'm leaning towards calling it by the proper term, so penis it is!

i never gave it much before what we will do, but i have heard the advice that it is better to use anatomically correct names.....although i never thought of the reasoning why that was better until a few pps have brought up the red flag for molestors issue i'm convinced now and will use penis
