We use the anatomically correct terminology for boys and girls or we say "genitals" for more general use. I think at some point, regardless of what term you use, your kid will eventually say it in pulic/in mixed company. It might be embarassing at the moment, but it's not that big of a deal.

Not a mom of a boy, but I did work in a sex crimes division as an analyst, and it is important to teach the proper names. There have been so many incidents of kids making disclosures to teachers or other care givers about sexual abuse, but because they talked about touching their "bird" or "pocketbook" or "cookie" it was difficult for them to recognize the disclosure, and somewhat more difficult to get charges to stick because these hazy terms can raise reasonable doubt.
