@MrsMccarthy: how small is your car? We have a 2001 civic and 2002 corolla and were able to fit a britax in the back. It is cozy but it works fine rear facing.

How tall is your 12 mth old? Britax convertibles are not recommended for tall or even avg sized kids as they are usually outgrown by 2 1/2 or when the child is in a 3T shirt.... their short shells just don't make the cut for extended rear facing.
As for best seat options for your car, I would join the Car Seats for the Littles fb group... there are a ton of techs in that group that will be able to give you the best recommendation to fit all of your needs (child size/fit & car size).

I know it's a little more expensive, but the Clek Foonf fits in the back of my husband's half cab in his truck...It's a lot of carseat all rolled up in a small footprint while truly being the safest on the market (made of steel!)... And it's good for 9 years! I got a coupon to Albee baby for 20% off and it made it not too much more than the other convertibles...

I was wondering the same thing, I have a 2007 civic and my dh puts his seat really far back to drive since he's tall and even our infant seat touches the front seats! I'd hate to fwd face early because the seat won't fit when we change to a convertible seat

@dreamocracy: There are lots of seats that fit in smaller cars that can still accommodate erf! Getting with a knowledgeable tech in your area or the fb group would be the best plan of action!
@ElbieKay: Combi owners unite!!! lol I our Combi, but I'm okay with upgrading to a higher limit seat when she outgrows the Combi... for more economical purposes it's not a very recommended seat.

@PrincessBaby: I have totally been sweating the Clek but I'm not sure I could convince my hubs to go for the price tag worth a shot though.
@ElbieKay: @runsyellowlites: lovin your Combi's huh? Maybe ill look into that one

We have and love the Combi and it's very compact, but it doesn't have a huge lifespan.

@MrsMccarthy: Yes! I LOVE our Combi! But like I said it's not a long lasting seat comparatively speaking. It has a 36" rf limiting so even with P being around the 11% we'll still only make it to around 3 y/o. For an average sized child you'd really be pushing it at 2-2.5 and then you'd have to buy ANOTHER convertible to last the recommended 4 years rf.
Definitely check out the fb group. All the techs in there are wonderful & love helping parents find the best seats for their kids & cars to keep them the safest they can be!
