Nose Frida, K'tan, rock and play sleeper, sleep and plays and a sink shower hose
Those are my most favorite things.

SwaddleMe swaddles, NoseFrida, and burp cloths. When we started leaving the house a month after birth, the Ergo was great too.

@hellobeeboston: We were gifted a bunch of diapers and it was such an awesome feeling not having to buy diapers for almost his entire first year!
honeydew / 7235 posts
@Alivoo01: yep! Exactly!! Didn't buy any diapers for months. It was awesome.
And people bringing food was so great. I had one neighbor cook double her dinner one night a week and bring it over hot for about 2 months. Loved her.

Not gear related but meals were the best gift we got and the only thing we asked for when people asked what we needed/wanted!

Hands down the video monitor. My dad bought us one that was much fancier (and pricier) than one that we would have chosen.
The swing also saved my life during the first few months.
I wish I had received more burp clothes. We kept going out and buying more.

If she is local I agree with others that meals would rock!!!
After my 1st I had a friend bring down 2 meals a week for the 1st month. She also brought me baked goods and walked my dog
Those things meant more to me than any other gift!

Cloth diaper inserts as burp cloths worked a 1000% times better. Diaper genie my husband is obsessed with. Marpac Dohm white noise machine. A soft terry duster robe (the zip up kind) - so useful when you are nursing in the beginning. Bring dense snacks and breakfasts like muffins, lactation cookies, hard boiled eggs, etc.

WubbaNub pacifier, SwaddleMe's, Aden & Anais swaddle blankets, and diapers!

@hellobeeboston: oh yeah. A hot meal. I still vividly remember the one hot meal that a lady from church brought us. It was amazing.

My favorite gifts were swaddles, burp cloths, and the rock and play. I seriously could not live without the rock and play!
I got a couple boxes of diapers and it turns out that brand did not work at all for DD.

Meals. Hands down the best gift anyone ever gave us.
@mediagirl: Yes! My neighbor brought us this amazing spinach pasta dish and it was the best thing I ever tasted.

I second what others said - meals hands down were the best. I didn't have to cook or really clean with those (awesome in those early days that are so exhausting!!)

Muslin swaddles were my favorite. Although my favorite thing I was given by a visitor was my BFF who brought me a huge bag of specialty bagels and gourmet cream cheese . Saved me from fumbling for breakfasts or snacks for the first bit!

(not a mom yet, but I can imagine what I'd want)
Is she nearby? Can you stop over for an evening or morning and help her out by doing laundry or cleaning a bathroom or something like that?

I got this OXO wipes dispenser, and at first, I thought it was a weird idea, but it's been actually a really nice thing to have.

Food if you live near her, or a meal delivery service. This is random, but I also love these nail scissors! WAY easier to use on a newborn then regular clippers. I still use these on my two year old.

Food.
Also - I had one dear friend send me a package of "everything you need for the first time in the middle of the night" - it was full of tylenol, teething tablets, gas meds, vicks for infants, gripe water, nipple cream, etc - amazing!

Food or a spa gift certificate for later. My bestie got me a spa gift card, it was a great way to help me feel like me and not just like a mom.

Swing, burp cloths and receiving blankets. Wubbanub is something that I bought that has been very useful.

My favorite gifts were the homemade ones - burp cloths & blankets from one friend and a quilt from another as well as food friends brought over after we got home.
If the baby has received a lot of gifts through the showers maybe a gift for the mom would be nice - a coffee mug that stays hot all day or something to read or watch while nursing the LO.

By the time my lo arrived I really had everything I needed for her so I appreciated the cute outfits and great getting diapers but the meals /snacks people brought over where the most helpful.

Food that I could eat one-handed and someone willing to come do the dishes/some cleaning were what was most helpful to me.

Hot meals delivered ready to eat were amazing!!!
Also things like a nose frida, Tylenol, etc!

Drugstore gift card for baby incidentals that always seem to pop up postpartum and in the early weeks.

Medela hydrogel pads. I had never heard of these, but my experienced mom friend got them for me. If these had not been in my house postpartum day 3, I am sure I would have quit nursing. Also Trumpette socks, seemed like a lot of people bought us baby socks but they were the only ones that seemed to stay on.
A few people bought be bigger sized clothes which was really nice. Everyone buys outfits 0-12 months and then all of the sudden your LO turns one and you have no clothes that fit them. I appreciated having a small stock of things size 18 and 24 months.

Food is awesome but maybe something for her? With my first I spent so much time and energy getting ready for the baby it didn't occur to me that I needed things too. Maybe some comfy yoga pants and a loose fitting tee, slippers, comfy tops that are nursing appropriate (if nursing) etc.
blogger / honeydew / 7081 posts
People who brought us food. Not just meals, but a friend brought muffins and cookies to pop in the freezer, granola bars, that sort of thing. one of my friends waited until the baby was a few days old, then asked what we needed- she brought us some sleepers, diapers and nursing pads, and it was the most thoughtful gift!

-A baby book for all the baby's firsts, keepsakes, photographs.
-Nipple cream, non-itchy nursing pads (Nuk brand is the best!!).
-Monogrammed blanket.
- Pottery Barn First Year photo frame.
- Toiletries essentials for the hospital with your favorite body wash/scrub, shampoo set etc.
-Nursing bras and tanks

@Mrs D: I just did a "medical kit" for my SIL for her baby shower! I sent DH out so many times for stuff, but they live in the country. It would be hard for them.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
Honestly, "things" weren't an issue b/c I have Amazon Prime so it was easy to order whatever I needed, whenever.
I def agree with FOOD! Not that I cook to begin with, but with a new baby, DH and I were both exhausted. He does 100% of the grocery shopping and cooking, but it was SO nice when friends visited and brought food, so it was 1 less thing to think about!!
pomegranate / 3791 posts
@Mrs D: this is what I was going to suggest too! You never think about the sick baby stuff until you need it. And no one wants to go to the store with a sick baby!

A&A swaddles, cute girly outfits, honestly I loved all the flower arrangements- but now I send them a week after baby to refresh what was given right away.
