Some movies are amazingly racist... like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, for example. I didn't even realize it when I saw the movie as a kid, which is how ignorant I was... but my friend across the hall in college was Sri Lankan and I was amazed to hear his take on the movie. I was horrified - not just by the movie, but by how I hadn't noticed it at all when I first saw it.

Later I realized that Steven Spielberg's take on China in the same movie was pretty much rehashing all the anti-"Jap" stereotypes from WW2 and applying them to the Chinese. That makes sense to me, because the Indiana Jones series is basically based on movie serials and pulp plots from the WW2 era... and those were seriously racist.

Steven does the same things to the Nazis in his other Indiana movies, but that's ok for two reasons: 1) Everybody hates Nazis and 2) Most people aren't Nazis now. I actually respect him for being so consistent at least, because at least he isn't being stereotypical to just to one group of people. He is just embracing the way that in the 40s, a lot of people stereotyped foreigners and it was A-OK. I see now why though he got criticized for racism in some of his other movies.

Steven definitely earned his place at #16 on the list of the 50 Most Racist Movies:

Other winners... Star Wars Episode 1, with their Japanese-esque bumbling "Trade Federation" and of course, the infamous Jar Jar Binks:

Mickey Rooney's Japanese neighbor in Breakfast at Tiffany's almost ruined a great movie for me:

Watched any movies lately that had not so subtle racism in them?
