I feel terrible! This morning at 4am my 9.5 month old fell off the bed. She usually sleeps in her crib which is in our room, but when she wakes up at night sometimes i bring her into our bed. Since she started crawling, she sometimes tries to crawl off the bed but never succeeds because she sleeps between me and Dh. Thus morning she climbed over me. I felt her reaching over me but i reacted too late and she hit the floor. I panicked and screamed and she started crying. I was frozen but dh jumped up and picked her up. In no time she was laughing and back to normal. She has no bumps or bruises and i massaged her all over and she doesn't seem to be sore anywhere. I wanted to take her to the hospital but dh thought that would distress her more.
Our bed is a standard bed so its about 2ft off the ground and our floors are wood. Do you guys think we should still take her to the er? She had a doctors appointment tomorrow anyway.
By the way i will never cosleep again i am traumatized!

this is my worst fear too.If she was her happy, normal self after it happened I would not worry about it. If she was sleepy or lethargic I would call the pedi to give them the rundown. If you think a call to the pedi would make you feel better though do it! That is what they are there for!

Aw poor you, I think things like that always stress out the parents more than the baby. That said I probably would get her checked out, with the floor being hard. I'm sure she's fine, but just for your peace of mind.

I don't think a fall off the bed warrants a trip to the ER unless she was acting weird after wards. You're going to take her to the doctor tomorrow anyway. Calm down, mama! You probably scared her more, I know that happens with my LO if I react a certain way that scares her.
ETA: LO sleeps with us and has fallen off the bed twice...surprisingly enough both times it wasn't because of co-sleeping. DH had put her down and turned his back to get ready, he got in major trouble, but LO was fine, we just watched her for any weird bumps and signs of a concussion.

Aw, hugs. This happened to my husband while he was watching LO a few months ago. We let the daycare teachers know – he told them “there were tears”, and they said “yours or hers?!”, and assured him that this is very common. They kept an eye on LO that day for any unusual behavior, but she was fine and her normal self so we didn’t take her in to the doctor. I called the pedi and spoke to the on-call nurse and she said if LO was acting her usual self and didn’t seem to be in any pain or distress she probably didn’t need to be seen.
It is terrifying though!

it's ok, LO did that too. We heard him wake up & then go silent, so we figured he went back to sleep. Oh no, he was crawling to the edge. Aaaand, thump. I felt awful, but he was okay.
Just make sure she's not excessively sleepy and watch for signs of concussion for the first 48 hours.

If she cried right away and is acting normally now she is probably fine!! I have a friend whose little girl fell off the bed while playing and she was unresponsive for a couple of minutes. So obviously they went to the hospital.
It's nice that you have a doctor's appointment tomorrow! It definitely sounds like she's fine but you can always call the nurses line and check in with them to give you peace of mind.
So sorry you are traumatized
but I think these big falls are a rite of passage for all parents! The lucky ones come out with no injuries

This happens to EVERYONE and it happened to us TWICE with our son. The first time was parental ignorance and the second time was just downright stupidity on my part. Anyway, we just kept an eye on him for 24 hours, making sure he was acting normally, nursing normally, his eyes weren't going all crazy and whatnot. Give yourself a break

Um, my babe fell off her changing table last week as I turned my back to tie up a trashbag. I even thought "oh I'll stand right next to the dresser so she cant fall if she rolls" but lo and behold, she did anyway. Oh, I felt so terrible. But she was fine after a few minutes of crying. I figure they're gonna take lots of spills and falls over the next few years. Unless she's acting different I woulnd't worry too much about it.

@Mrsbells: I'm sorry! My LO hasn't done this yet, but I'm sure she will at some point, either off the bed or off the couch. If it's any consolation, my LO was laying next to me on the couch yesterday evening and I managed to elbow her in the head. It didn't even wake her up. I'm realizing these little ones are way more resilient than we are!

When my sister was small and hit her head pretty bad, she was immediately sleepy and my parents were trying to get her to stay awake while they got her to the hospital. She had a concussion and a cracked skull (she slipped going up the ladder to a pool slide and fell down on the concrete-it was terrifying!), but it was OBVIOUS something was really wrong immediately. So I think if your baby was laughing a short time later-she's fine! Probably just scared her really bad!

You're not alone!
I tripped up the stairs taking LO up to his crib on Monday and bumped his head into the post at the top of the stairs. He barely grazed it, but I was freaking out. I felt so terrible and like such a horrible mother! He didn't have a bump and cried more b/c he realized how scared I was and was scared himself. He was totally fine afterwards and I watched him for the rest of the day to be sure he acted normally.
Just keep an eye on LO...check to be sure her pupils dilate after bringing her in and out of light, that she doesn't throw up or seem lethargic later. If that happens, call your doc ASAP! In the meantime, take a deep breath and know that it happens to everyone!

It must have been traumatizing! I dont think you DD needs to go to the ER since she was laughing and was a trooper about it. Since you're going to the Dr tomorrow you can ask your dr to just give her a good once over to make sure shes in tip top shape. It happens to the best of us!
