Update: The numbers from his blood tests are in and are a bit of a mixed bag - the liver enzymes are coming down a bit but his blood count is low. We are hopeful that he is fighting this virus (most likely cause) and about to turn the corner but he needs a blood transfusion to help him out. I'm feeling more optimistic (home for a quick shower, DH is with L), but we still have a ways to go to beat this thing. Thanks everyone for your kind words.

Oh poor baby, and poor Mama and Dad. I"m so sorry, that sounds just awful. I'd be an absolute mess too...I hope he turns a corner soon and you can bring your sweet boy home!

I worried that I was falsely optimistic. The GI specialist was here again this morning and although his liver enzymes are still going down a little it was the first time he used the term "liver failure" and talked about the possible need to go to LA (I'm in orange county) for transplant. In the back of my mind I knew it COULD get that bad but I didn't think we were close enough to have to discuss it. I hope it's just worst case type talk and I feel I'll know more when our doctor comes to talk to us. His spirits are up a bit today, we've seen some small smiles which makes me believe that he will get better

OK, deep breath, While most of his test numbers look promising, one indicator of liver function has been decreasing which is causing some worry. Additionally, there have been 3 recent cases of acute hepatitis at UCLA that took a sudden turn for the worse and want L there in case that happens for him too. I'm still terrified to think that my sweet, strong, little baby may need a liver transplant. My parents are flying here tomorrow and DH's brother will be visiting this weekend. I have a friend who did her ped residency in LA and she is really optimistic so i'm trying to stay hopeful and keep myself together for my baby.
