I have to think about this for a bit!

I have read East of Eden by John Steinbeck many times, it is so good!
I also really love The World According to Garp by John Irving....it will make you laugh and cry so much!

I was thinking Harry Potter, too.
Uhh, I have not read the bible. My DH thinks it's weird that I'm catholic and more religious than he is but, yet, haven't read the whole bible. My explanation... that's why I go to CCD and church! Haha.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Everyone should find their own personal legend. Love that book.

@bluestriped bee: wait.. You're catholic but don't read the bible?!? That's so weird to me haha!
@Leialou: I tried.. I did... I couldn't stand them.
@prettylizy: @Sweet T: I'm ashamed to admit I still haven't read it! My mom was against Harry potter so I just watched all the movies after marrying DH! I'm building the book collection now

@Mrs. Pen: OMG Make time and do it. They are so well written, and the story is so wonderful and imaginative. They are just brilliant!!

A lot of my favorite books were ruined by movies...and I don't know if I believe in a book that everyone should read, since everyone has such different tastes.
The Time Traveler's Wife was so much better than the movie made it seem. That was my favorite book the year it came out.
Life of Pi blew my mind (again, way before the movie) and it was my favorite book of that year. Same with The Namesake (Jhumpa Lahiri) I actually liked that movie, but the book was so, so much better!
I also really like Brick lane, by Monica Ali; A Thousand Splendid Sons, by Khaled Hosseini (I met him once, and he is surprisingly handsome in real life); The Inheritance of Loss, by Kiran Desai; Good in Bed, by Jennifer Weiner; Fargo Rock City, by Chuck Klosterman. I actually like all of Klosterman's stuff.
For YA books, it's hard to beat John Green. He's also cute in real life.

@MediaNaranja: East of Eden is one of my faves from high school. Loved it before damn oprah book club.
A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry, and Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas.

My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult.
If you love Harry Potter, you'd probably enjoy Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. I love Greek mythology!

I DO think everyone should read the Bible just because of the historical significance - you are missing such a huge piece of history, the #1 best seller of all time.
There are lots of other classics I think everyone should read though - Pride and Prejudice, LOTR series...
I mean I would say War and Peace and the Iliad and the Odyssey and books like that, but I think I'm weird and most people would be bored reading them. To me though... must reads. I've read them over and over.

Oh, and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Diaz! That book just killed me.
grapefruit / 4817 posts
Harry potter for sure. And Pride and Pejudice and the LOTR trilogy. But for something that hasn't been mentioned...Catcher in the Rye. But I feel like if you didn't read it as an angsty teenager, you missed out.

To Kill A Mockingbird. I don't actually like the book that much, but I think it's important to read. Also, The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, The Sound and the Fury, The Giver, Catcher in the Rye. And I think all women should read The Handmaid's Tale.

The book of negroes
We need to talk about Kevin.
There's more but I can't remember off the top of my head.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. Loved the plot twists!
And HP series of course. Gotta love it

Where the red fern grown, a million pieces, every Mary Higgins Clark book, Anne of green gables, Heidi, pride and prejudice, the great gatsby, to kill a mockingbird, the giver. I can't think of anymore good ones right now.

@sera_87: we need to talk about Kevin was so tough to read. I'm just so glad I wasn't a parent yet when I read it.
@Anagram: I love both The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns so much. I am so excited to read Khaled Hosseini's new book when it comes out later this year. The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao is one of my favorite books ever.

Harry Potter is at the top of my list (right behind the Bible).
I also found that (for Christians/interested people) Prayer by Philip Yancey was pretty life-changing.
There are SO many others that I would recommend, too! I read fiction like its going out of style.

I guess I don't read that often anymore because all the books I thought of were from high school (over 10 years ago!)
Rain of Gold by Víctor E. Villaseñor
Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel
The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan

@mrsjazz: love the alchemist too!
@anonysquire: Where the red fern grows is one of my favorite books!!

@matador84: I like to read it every year!
@sera_87: We need to talk about Kevin was a hard read. I kept having to put it down--it was good--but also just a tough story.
I read the first Harry Potter after my co-worker made me (this was last year). I stopped at book 2, just wasn't into it.
@Anagram: @plantains: I loved The Kite Runner. He's such a great writer.

For a funny look at motherhood, I would highly suggest "To What Miserable Wretches Have I Been Born". It's revenge poetry of babies and toddlers and it is one of the funniest things I've read in a long long time.

The Bible And To Kill a Mockingbird
@sera_87: I really want to read We Need to Talk About Kevin, but I just don't think I can right now. Maybe once all of my kids are grown and I know that they have turned out okay!
@jmarionsmith: I LOVE The Red Tent! I should read it again. I haven't read it since middle school.

Loooved Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts...also 11/22/63 by Stephen King. Both were fabulous.

@weagle: you read it in middle school?! i thought it was pretty racy for me to read as an adult!
coconut / 8498 posts
@jmarionsmith: I know... I don't know that I would let LO read it in middle school. I devour books, though. By middle school I was bored with YA books and had started reading through my mom's book collection.

@swedishfish: I loved My Sister's Keeper! I cried like a baby at the end. I hated the movie though.
GOLD / coconut / 8266 posts
@Sweet T: I agree, I didn't like the movie either. Just leave the story alone! I don't like most movies that come from books; the books are usually better.

Also, anything by Dan Brown. Everyone knows him for The Da Vinci Code but his other books are amazing as well. I think he has a new one coming out this spring.
