This is possibly my millionth post about names. I'm strugglin'
requirements: not too common (preferably out of top 150-200), easy to spell/pronounce, classic style
What do you think about Viola? It's a family name of a dear, dear person in my family who passed away about a year ago (at age 104!!). Her nickname was Olee, but her full name was Viola.
Main concern: Violet is super common - would the nickname "vi" be too common? Also, would people pronouce it "VEE-ola" instead of "VI-ola"?

I don't think its that common (I haven't met any IRL!) and I would pronounce it VIola! I think it's a great name

@blackbird: Viola isn't, it's ranked 319, Violet is #50. I don't know any Violet's IRL, but i also only know a small "sample size" of kids who will be around the same school-age as mine

I may be overly paranoid about the commonality thing. My SIL has a common first name paired wtih my common last name and she had 4 people in her class (at her large high school) that had the same first AND last name!!! one of those 4 even had the same middle name! She haaaates it, even though her name is beautiful

I think it's lovely! The only Viola I've heard of is the (fictional) mother in Monster-In-Law.

@blackbird: My SIL actually has your first name She's a bit younger, so maybe it picked up at her age a little more, or just luck of the draw with her class

I like Viola but I only just realized from your post that I pronounce it wrong. I actually play the viola so I would pronounce it the same way as the instrument.

This name makes me think of "Twelth Night" by Shakespeare. I would say VIola. I love it

I pronounced it like Vee-ola like the instrument. I think that you would have to correct people often. It is a beautiful name though.

Automatically thought of Viola Davis, who is such a strong presence, I think it's a great name! And I would only think to pronounce it Vi-ola due to that! I don't think you have to worry about it being too common and I don't think you have to worry about people not knowing the pronunciation?
