I have a day off so I'm looking at my name spreadsheets and would love your input!
If a name ends in an "el" sound, do you prefer the -el spelling or -elle ? For example Isabel vs Isabelle.
Also, what are some good middle name ideas for such a 3 syllable 'el' name? The last name is 2 syllables.
We don't know the sex of this baby so I'm trying to keep a few contenders for either way. Any names you've come across lately that you love?

Depends on the name for the -el / -elle debate for me!
For example, I tend to like Noel better than Noelle / Ariel better than Arielle, but definitely prefer like, Annabelle to Annabel. It can also change the way the name is pronounced (Gabrielle vs Gabriel).
For a middle name, I prefer 1 syllable middle names for first names with more than 3 syllables. Like... Annabelle Joy LASTNAME or Julianna Claire LASTNAME.
Names I love:
Boys: Daniel, Clark, Eli, Samuel, Henry, Max
Girls: Jane, Julia, Molly, Sophie (it's so popular but I love this name), Violet, Clara

Generally, I prefer the “Elle” ending.
I agree that a one syllable middle name would work well.

@smuckers: your Noel vs Noelle comparison interested me - are those not separate names to you? For me Noel is generally a boy name, and pronounced almost know Knoll, whereas Noelle is No-Elle and a girl.

@erinbaderin: My only real life experience with the name was the Noel and Noelle (and sometimes Noel with an umlaut over the e) were all the same (feminine) name pronounce No-el!
I didn't even know Noel could be pronounced Knoll until GBBO

I prefer “Elle” to. “El”!
Both of my children have 3 syllable first names and we have a 2 syllable last name and both of their middle names are 1 syllable! It makes it flow really nicely!

I agree with the 1-syllable middle names! It does give a good flow. Thank you so for ideas... keep them coming! I love Raye, had never heard it before but it has such a nice sound

One thing to consider about the el/elle distinction is the language of origin--for example, Isabel is the Spanish spelling, Isabelle is French

@nana87: that's a really good point. I'm going from a style and preference perspective, while it's a question of cultural origin and significance. The name I'm looking at is used both in a Spanish and French context.
