I told my good friend that we are expecting again. She congratulated us and immediately rattled off a list of 6 names (all common names) that she doesn't want us to use as a first or middle names since she is saving them for her future children. I told her that it wasn't fair and is a bit silly for her to put any restrictions on what we can name our baby. She got upset and ended the call shortly after that.
Ugh. We really like 2 of the names on her don't use list!

That is ridiculous , ignore her. Names aren't territory to protect, whoever has the baby first gets first pick. She'll get over it.

ugh that is sooo annoying. I think you said the polite thing and kinda made light of it. That is so silly.
I was dating this one guy and his sister and I loved the same name! We had a running joke on who could get married and have a baby first to use the name 
funny thing is that both of us are married with a kid now and neither of us even used that name!!!
I wonder if she'll even use the names she picks now... we totally didn't use any of the names we picked out when we were first married.

Yeah, I don't like any of the names I had as runner ups for my LO.
Plus the names on her list are so common...John, Emma, Thomas, etc!

Oh, that is so silly! If she loves the names and has six to pick from than she'll just have to choose whatever is left. This is why I don't normally share the names I love with anyone. Then, I can't blame anybody for knowing something they couldn't have possibly known. Plus, I would never talk to a friend like that and put limitations on them...not fair at all.

My sister used a name I wanted. It was our grandmothers middle name. I was not pregnant yet. I was a little sad but I got over it. Not only was I not pregnant but there was no guarantee I would have a girl. So I was like awe bummer... And moved on. Don't worry about it. Name your child whatever you want.

That's absurd. You can't claim a name until there is a child to have it! Just ignore her and name your baby what you want. If she gets upset that's her own issue.

that is really weird. the only time we mentioned "claiming" or "owning" a name would have been if say, my SIL announced her pregnancy and we already had a name chosen (or were down to a few). I never told people when I wasn't pregnant that names were off limits! So bizarre!
that said, there was one name I loved and a friend of mine (also was not even engaged at that point) told me she "called dibs on it" and I couldn't use it. I used to just say, "I'll never have a girl anyway so it's not a big deal" but then I got pregnant, with a girl, and she reminded me of her name choice! so strange. she turned me off to it anyway.

@autumnlove: seriously, I don't know how she thought that was okay....that's just crazy. Now I do know some family members that had friends and they went on and on about how they were naming their daughter Kimberly. That's what they picked, everything was monogramed, etc. The family members didn't say what name they were use, but promised it wasn't Kimberly. Well, the family members ended up going into labor first, didn't call their friends, and had a girl--that they named Kimberly. So, the friends come to visit and they tell them that they are using that name and they never spoke to each other again.

Wow. That's so weird.
My husband's boss' wife and I were pregnant at the same time, and discussed names one day. When I told her my choice for my girl, she was like, oh... that's nice, and you could totally tell she thought the name was horrible. She was expecting a girl, but ended up having a boy (ULTRASOUND BEWARE!), and named him a name ONE LETTER different than what I named my girl........... I don't care, I just thought it was weird that she didn't like my name, but the name they chose ended up being SO close.

My grandma and her brother named their sons the same name and no one caress. 
Yup, same first name. No one cares! No one even mixes them up (different last name). So if family can do it, so can friends.

My SIL told me she'd kill me if I got pregnant before her (they'd been trying for 7 years). I'm sure she was joking but I took the opportunity to tell her DH and i's top names. DH was named after his dad but isn't a junior and SIL was REALLY close to FIL and I figured she'd use DH's first name to honor her dad. But she agreed not to use it as a first name because DH and I hope to have a junior someday. It wasn't a nasty conversation, it was just friendly coordination among sisters shes due four months before us and plans to name her son after her husband but with FIL/DH's name as his middle name. My favorite girl name is so far from her favorite girl name, it wasn't an issue.

That's so lame! I say who cares if the name you like is on her list. She can't claim 5 names. I could see if the wanted to claim one name that she loved forever and was her grandmoterh's name or something. I could understand that. But 5 names? That's ridic! Go for whatever name you like!!

I feel that among friends, all names are fair game. Do you know how many friends I have with boys named Michael or some form of Jack all within months of each other? Within a family, it might get a little tricky. But really, it should be first come first served.
