@Mrsbells: Can't decide if that makes it more or less disturbing ... I guess more since they already knew the nanny well.

The Nanny in the story has a different last name than the nanny said they went to DR with it seems like.
So horrific. The poor children, the poor family. It's so hard to believe that someone can just flip a switch like that and so scary that it does happen and people can hide their incredible darkness.

It seems like there is a ton of conflicting information out there right now.
I had trouble sleeping last night just thinking about these poor people and how their lives will never be the same. Rationally, I know that it's a freak thing, but still, it is a parent's worst nightmare come true. I also feel heartbroken for the sister who lived. What a sad, terrible story to carry with you for the rest of your life.

The nanny's name is Yoselyn Ortega; they called her Josie. Background check or not, she had no criminal record. The family went to her home in DR for 9 days with her earlier this year. This is just an extremely sad story.

The fact that they went above and beyond to get to know the nanny by meeting her family in the Dominican Rep is what makes it even more disturbing for me.
The mom blogged, she could have been among us here. I'll have a hard time getting this story out of my head for awhile ...

This story is so sad and disturbing. I can't believe anyone would ever do that to anyone, let alone 2 innocent children

Terrifying. I really shouldn't have read the article. Will be thinking of the mom and the rest of the family.

I made this mistake of reading about this before bed last night, and held Evan extra close to me.
So sad. I can't even begin to comprehend what they're going through right now.

yep, that's the terrifying part to me - that background check or not / long length of time or not there is no way to REALLY know someone or what frame of mind they are in. just the idea that someone can be capable of such a terrible thing. the whole story breaks my heart.

The really sickening thing is all the horrible comments I am seeing from people on news sites, criticizing the mom for having a nanny. Just sick

This story just will not get out of my head.I have been thinking about it nonstop as I prepare to leave my baby with a nanny in January. How do I go about performing a background check?

I'm so heart broken about this story.
I'm not a blogger but it feels horrible to have this happen to a fellow blogger.
So so sad.

Wow. Unbelivable. I wonder if the nanny had some sort of psychotic break?

@Grace: Definitely sounds from the reports today that she did have a psychotic break. And while there's really not a lot of easy, foolproof ways of predicting to whom such a psychiatric event will happen, it is somewhat comforting that such a thing is incredibly rare. Awful, awful, awful.
