I don't know how I missed that this week is the National Spelling Bee but the finals are on tonight, in a few minutes! Is anyone else a spelling bee geek? (probably going to hear echoes)

I haven't watched it but I heard that there is a local kid from around here who made it to the finals! They were talking about him on the radio and sheesh this kid is genius - fluent in English, French and Finnish, runs cross-country, track, state runner up in academic triathlon and was on a world champion Knowledge Master Open team.
Kid is way smarter than I could hope to be. I hope he does well!
what channel is it on?

@Mrs. Pen: It's on ESPN and you might be able to watch online too?
The kids' awkwardness is an essential part of the bee!

@spaniellove: ahh I don't get ESPN. I'll have to see if they're streaming it online.

@spaniellove: nope requires a TV service/subscription to watch online.

@Mrs. Pen: Aww, they changed it! In the past I was able to watch online without that.

@spaniellove: what kind of words do they have on the national spelling bee?

Aw, I missed it! : heart: the spelling bee!
@spaniellove: I think I actually started this thread last year and got radio silence, too. But we can be nerds together
Side note: have you seen Spellbound?

Omg it was so great! I almost had a heart attack for the kid on the last word...and watching the mother who was rocking in her seat!

@Mrs. Pen: The last word was feuilleton - a lot of them were words that an adult might know if they'd read a lot or were familiar with other cultures!
@LovelyPlum: YES!

@JerricaBenton: There was a little sister who covered her face. It was so cute!

@Mrs. Pen: there is a book each year with set lists!
@spaniellove: best. Documentary. Ever. Quintessential awkwardness all the way through!

@spaniellove: I just did their test online and didn't do so hot haha! These kids definitely have me beat. I used to be an excellent speller too but it's hard to keep up with.

It is crazy how if either of them got the one word they got wrong at a different point, they wouldn't have been co-champions.

@spaniellove: I know! And she was so excited when he got it. There was so much pressure on them at the end - I was so happy they both won

I watched! Love watching every year - those kids are amazing and so dedicated. I thought so many of them handled misspelling words very gracefully too.
