I know it's upsetting but try to calm down. In the middle of the night with no rest is no time to evaluate your parenting skills! You are doing fine. Letting a baby stay awake for 3 hours is not a crime. Live and learn. Hugs!

Our 6 week old napped for less than 30 minutes for the 5 1/2 hours we were at a Super Bowl party yesterday. She also was content, not passed around a ton, but just chilling because of the noise and excitement. Don't judge your parenting by that. Those sorts of days will come.

It is lame that your FIL took LO without asking.

Step back off the ledge and take a breath. It happens. It's not your fault. Don't take it as a benchmark of your parenting skills.

First of all, kudos to you for being relaxed enough to bring a 1 month old out around a bunch of people, much less a super bowl party! I was too scared and overparanoid to leave the house with DD at that age, so that's a huge step.

Yes, you kept your LO up for 3 hours and it's making for a rough night, but it'll all get worked out in the next 24 hours as he catches up on sleep so try not to beat yourself up.

As for you FIL, I can totally relate. My MIL did that to me, and still does even at a year old. The only that helped was for me to set some boundaries early on and to have DH help to mention it when she would take DD (in a nonchalant/sarcastic way)

Don't worry about it...one night of being passed around is fine. Sure, you paid for it later, but it's not causing any long time harm.

My 5 year old ds had so much sugar yesterday, between my baby shower, an outing with my dad, and the Super Bowl. I had to deal with the sugar high and the crash. Total mom fail. But, these things happen. Special events have special circumstances. We'll just take it easy this week.

I don't think its terrible to keep them up that long. If he was really tired, he would have fallen asleep or gotten really fussy.

Don't worry about this, it's just one of those learning situations! You are tired (rightfully so) so you are overanalyzing yourself. Just breathe and know you are a great momma!!

There will be lots of things that you will "live and learn" with a new baby and nothing is your fault, it's just learning what works and doesn't work for your baby:).

Just as important for a baby to learn to go with the flow, I think it's important for parents to (try to) learn, too! It was a special night with an event, visitors, and staying up too late -- but I'm sure everyone (even the baby!) appreciated the extra cuddles they got b/c you let LO stay up.

...and who's to say you wouldn't have had the same night of bad sleep even if you had put LO down like normal? You never know when those little monsters will throw a curveball I think they like to keep parents from feeling too confident that they know what they're doing! ha.
