Call me crazy...has anyone gotten a new car because they are having a baby? I drive a 4 dr Civic and have alway loved it (it is 9 years old!), but not sure how I feel about having it now with baby on the way.

I wish! I would love a minivan or SUV. Instead, I got a remodeled basement
pear / 1723 posts
We did! We traded in my little scion for a minivan But we're having twins, so it was a little more of a necessity.
squash / 13199 posts
no because we already have 2 sedans that are spacious, but when we are about to have bay number two we will buy an suv type car

I would love a Honda Pilot and/or something with 4WD for when it snows here. The thought of taking LO to daycare in the snow and ice freaks me out.

We were looking at cars when I was pregnant, but we decided to hold off for now.

We're gonna get a bigger car when #2 is born. Mostly likely getting an infiniti qx56
kiwi / 575 posts
We moved to the 'burbs to a larger house because of our growing family and will need to get a 2nd car before she's born in a couple of months! Most likely just getting a commuter car for my husband.

I drive a MINI Clubman but we're thinking of getting the MINI Countryman. I love my car but I want to make sure the stroller I'm getting (Britax B-Agile) fits into the trunk.

I bought a new car shortly before we started trying. I just wanted a new car so it wasn't really for the baby... But we did consider what would work best with a baby when we were choosing. I got a Toyota Venza and I love it. Hubs has a new Camry which is also baby friendly so we're happy with our cars.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@Mrs. Jacks: ah, my dream car.
We have a Camry and a Mazda 3 and we're keeping them for now because...as of July 1, they'll both be paid off! A paid off car is better than a new car with a payment, imo.

@mediagirl: Seriously! We got the 2T so we have good gas mileage too
eggplant / 11824 posts
We did. I have a Toyota 4runner which is plenty of space but my husband had a 2 door Mercedes sports coupe. We traded his car in for the all-road Audi station wagon (a6? I think)
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@yoursilverlining: We have a 4 runner too. Mr Jacks keeps asking what we're going to do when it dies. I say it will never die! It's a 96. The All-road is an A4 which is lifted and outfited for sport driving.

We got a traverse shortly before ttc, but it was more of a "DH wanted a suv-so we'll use baby as an excuse" thing.

We did- we got rid of my 1993 Nissan Sentra for a 2011 Subaru Forester. The Sentra was old and not really reliable anymore, we needed something safer and with more space. I love it! We also have a 2003 Jeep Wrangler, but the baby never rides in it. Whoever has the baby for the day gets the Subaru, and the other drives the Jeep.
blogger / pomelo / 5400 posts
Yup! I had been driving an 05 Nissan Sentra. Upgraded to a 2011 Hyundai Sonata, which is still pretty good on gas but much safer and roomier.

We did... I had a 4 door civic and hubs and a coupe so we sold my civic and used the money towards an Acura mdx. That thing eats gas like no other!

@roccoandkirby: I drive a MINI Cooper S, and now that LO is 7 months old, I really want a Countryman! I have no idea how I'm going to get her in a rear facing convertible seat in the Cooper
eggplant / 11824 posts
@Mrs. Jacks: nice! I love my 4runner and they do go forever! So reliable. I like the Audi too - it is sporty to drive, which I think made it easier on my husband to go from "sports car" to "family car". It's a sporty family car, with heated leather seats (my favorite feature!!)
grapefruit / 4056 posts
We did as well, I was driving a Mitsubishi Eclipse, and there was no way a rear facing carseat would fit in the back. When I was in my second trimester, we started shopping for SUV's, but ended up buying a VW Passat Wagon, we totally LOVE it surprisingly (I never thought I would buy a station wagon).

@crash806: love the Traverse!
We have SUVs so not necessary. When we have a second one I would love something along the lines of Honda Odyssey!

@yoursilverlining: Heated seats and automatic lights/wipers are my favorite feature.

The in-laws had been commenting numerous of times about us selling our car and needing to buy a station wagon ever since we announced our pregnancy. We drive a small car, but it's a 4-door and it's fine for a small family - plus we don't drive much anyway.
It's just not right for us, though I can understand why it would be convenient for others.

We did--we traded my husband's car in for a crossover SUV when DS was born then sold that shortly after he turned 2 and downsized to a full sized sedan. Now I really want a new highlander now that baby #2 will be here soon!
I just want to be able to have the third row seat to drive more people around...besides they're pretty suv's
cantaloupe / 6687 posts
@HeatherlovesKenny: we want the highlander hybrid for the third row seating and it is a pretty SUV
We have a prius that we love and 2 door Acura rsx that I bought when I was single and not thinking about babies and just wanted a little commuter car.
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
we did, but it was a matter of timing, too - DH's car died, so he inherited my older sentra and we bought a 2001 highlander. so not a *new* car, but new to us! we couldn't really fit a carseat comfortably in the backseat of the sentra, either. learned that when I babysat my nephew.

We upgraded to a GMC Acadia today actually! We didnt have a choice of a new vehicle due to an accident but we did go bigger.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
I wish I could! It wasn't in the budget though.. We have a ford fusion and for one little baby, it's enough
I really wanted the Toyota Highlander though
pomegranate / 3890 posts
i wish we could afford to, just because both of our cars are two doors, which i know is gonna be such a pain lugging a carseat in and out of.
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
At first I just switched cars with my DH because I drove a 2 door and he had a 4 door. But then we quickly realized that our car was too small because we take the dog with us everywhere.
We had the dog riding shot gun so he wouldn't mess with LO in the back, me in the back, LO's diaper bag in the middle, LO in the back, and the stroller taking up the whole trunk. We had no room for anything else, plus I started getting car sick riding in back all the time. So we got a mini van.

i am hoping next week i am able to drive home (350 miles back) from my shower with a newer car! i just can't imagine right now a car seat in the middle of my little civic.
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
We drove a Civic for years until just before we got pregnant, we switched to a CR-V and we love it. It's perfect for one kid, but we're thinking we need something with a 3rd row seat for when the grandparents are here and we need to transport passengers too. We're so anti-minivan so we're kinda stuck at the moment. We may just get a second car (a sedan) and stick with the CR-V instead of moving to one larger car.
papaya / 10560 posts
@mrswagon - when we looked at cars last weekend DH wanted me in a crosstour and i was more settled on a cr-v. i had no intention of looking/driving a pilot but the price wasn't that much different...test drove and loved! just like a c-rv except more space. i am so keeping my fingers crossed i can get a pilot if the price is right!
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
We ended up gettin 2! We traded in DHs 2 sweater ford ranger for my new 2011 Nissan Rogue and DH started driving my little Pontiac Sunfire.... Well he lasted 3 months driving the 'Crapfire' as he called it and then upgraded to a new 2012 VW Passat. Both cars have 4 doors, mine is great for lugging groceries, stroller etc, his is super slick ride and very fuel efficient for his commute
GOLD / pear / 1845 posts
Yep, our car was a two door and unreliable. We got a Toyota four runner, much easier to pack things into! I also feel much safer in the winter as we live in the mountains.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@Hanasu: What year did you get? I told Mr. Jacks that I want another one someday, but it would have to be 2001 or before... I don't love the new body style.
blogger / pomegranate / 3300 posts
We were not going to get new cars but then I found out we would have three backwards facing car seats so minivan it was. We got the Honda odyssey. We had to buy used though to manage a budget.
GOLD / pear / 1845 posts
@Mrs. Jacks: It's a 2001...the silver limited. They're generally a pretty solid car to get used.
