My current iPhone is dying, on it's very last legs. I'm reading up on the announcement of the new iPhones. Will you get a new iPhone 8 or hold out - and pay up- for the "game changing" iPhone X?

I'm going to get the iPhone 8. I might upsize to the plus this time around. I have a 6s that is on its third replacement due to hardware issues. Ugh.
Wow these phones are crazy expensive. All of them. The X is...wow. I'm not paying over a thousand bucks for that especially when the tech will trickle down in a year.
FYI: for anyone reading this going to a new phone. Do yourself a favor and set it up as a "new phone". Don't restore it from a backup of an old phone. You just carry over all of your bloat and software excess that builds up. I did this with my last two phones and gained (no joke) 20gbs each one, even after reinstalling all of my original apps and files. It's more work but worth it. Also might help you limp more life out of an older device. Just did this on my
iPad mini 2 and gained 17 gbs of free space and improved speed.

I'm not sure what my game plan is. My iPhone is still chugging along but probably won't be for too much longer. I really want the portrait mode but it's not available on the 8 - it's on the 7 plus, 8 plus, and X. I really didn't want to get the bigger size but might do it just for the camera.
I have no desire for the X - it's gorgeous and cool to look at but I don't really care that much about the features it offers.

I'm. It sure what we're going to do. We both have the 7 plus and they're working fine. We're on the payment plan for them and we can upgrade to a new one or keep them for another year and then get a $200 credit for selling it back to Apple.
I'm only considering the X, but I'm not sure I want to take the jump. I like the wireless charging and the new portrait mode features. But I might skip it and convince DH that I should upgrade my Apple Watch instead.

im due for a new phone... probably will get the X.... i'm one of those hopeless apple romantics and fall in love with everything they produce. lol... but im really itching to get the new watch also.. which is definitely not happening since i have the series 2.. and i already love my current watch.. but the series 3 LTE options and the altimeter seem so nice.. but i really can't justify getting a new watch lol.

I have a 6 plus and have grown to hate the large size. So I was waiting to see the 8 and X before deciding what to do. I love new gadgets and thought I'd want the X but after watching the announcement, I'm not feeling that phone. So I'm thinking I'm getting the regular 8. Sad I won't get the dual cameras but I hate how large my plus is. I think I can wait a few years for more iPhones like the X cheaper and with more color options (I hope).

My iPhone just stopped working so I have an appt with the Genius Bar tomorrow. I really don't want to buy a new phone but I did look at the new phones. Umm, the iPhone X is $999!!!! Yeah, if someone rich wants to buy me a phone, that would be great! I complain about paying over $500 for my current phone, so a $1000 phone is a bit crazy for me.
If I get another phone, which I'm hoping I don't, I'll be getting another iPhone 6 and maybe the 7. I'm in the club that never gets the newest model. I get the discounted ones. I am wondering which of my family or friends gets the new X. It will be cool to see the face recognition. Also, wondering if the phone will notice a difference if you have an identical twin. Hmmm...

Just watched the whole keynote. It is pretty exciting. Doing the math, if I trade in my phone now I'll get about $350. If I wait a year, X will be cheaper but then my trade in will be that much less. So necessity and logic says no need. Chance says no need. I just dropped my 6s on the tile minutes after watching the keynote and no damage. So will be keeping it old school for awhile more. #$$moneyindabank

I have a 6 and I'm planning on keeping it until it dies. I probably won't upgrade to the X since I never get the newest/greatest version.

I'm due for an upgrade/my contract ends in October, so I am switching to Xfinity mobile ($45 a month!) and hopefully upgrading to a 7/7s at a good price now that the new ones were announced.
@littlebit thanks for the tip, can you at least bring over your address book and then manually re-install all the apps?

I already told DH he needs to pre-order me the iPhone 8! I desperately need more storage on my phone.

Face ID creeps me out. Going to skip any phone that uses that as a main mechanism

Samsung already has this technology, and it's about half the price, BUT you have to be willing to use android.
I am still loyal to the iphone, I think I am on my fifth one now? I am usually at least 2 versions behind, but I am okay with that. No need for me to be on the bleeding edge.

@lioneyes: it's all stored in iCloud anyway. So once you log into ICloud when you sign into the phone or iPad, all of that will import seamlessly, including photos, your calendar, any docs, etc stored in the cloud.
What won't go over is all of your apps so you have to set all of that up again (including mail)
When you restore from backup it basically clones your old device (carrying over a lot of the problems which kill and clog up the devices)

@looch: Yeah, that was my thought. Samsung has been doing this since at least the Galaxy S7, if not before. This is not cutting edge technology! I don't get why everyone is acting like this is such new stuff. That being said, I'm a loyal Android user (have used LG, Samsung, and Google phones) and have NEVER understood the Apple hype. So...perhaps my judgement is clouded.

I have a 6s that is on its last leg. The difference between 7 and 8 is pretty minimal, so I'll probably go for a 7.

I have an iphone 6 that is 3 years old that I hope to get another year of use out of. It doesn't really have enough space but I pay for icloud storage and the battery sucks so I have to be careful about that. So maybe I'll get an 8 a year from now, fingers crossed!

@petitenoisette: curious how you deal with the battery issues? Do you charge throughout the day? This is my biggest issue with my 6s, thebattery cant keep up with my regular usage, even with regular charging and monitoring app usage.

My husband just got a new iPhone yesterday and got a 6S. My 6 is still going strong. We're more the type to buy the cheapest version that's out and keep it until it breaks.

I am still paying off my 7, and after that I'm keeping it until I need a new one.. def not shelling out $999 just to say I have one!

My 6s has been dying for awhile (several times it's gone from like 40% battery to shutting off completely and not turning back on after charging overnight but waking up miraculously right when I'm about to take it in...)SO I'm def getting a new one soon but I don't know which

I'm using a 5 (not even a 5S) so it can be a little slow plus the battery is pretty much done. I am pretty sure I'll be pre-ordering the 8 plus. I don't care for facial recognition and I like keeping the home button.
coconut / 8472 posts
@mrsrain: Just a thought, if you like your phones to last a long time (more than 2 years), then you're better off getting the 8. It'll be supported for longer and has slightly newer and faster technology.
eggplant / 11824 posts
@mrsrain: not to butt in but I also have 6 plus and battery issues and I solve it by having a plug at work and mostly keeping it plugged in during the day, charge at night most nights (sometimes I forget) and have a charger in my car just in case. Between those I rarely have issues
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@nana87: My 6 is similar- it does the random shut down, and recently all of my pictures disappeared, then magically came back! And all my texts got deleted.
I'll prob get the 8. I don't care for the bigger size and don't really want to pay $1000. Plus the 8 is available much sooner, right?
nectarine / 2317 posts
@Foodnerd81: @nana87: My 6 does this too! and the battery doesn't last an hr unplugged. I'm going for the 8 plus I think. I want the newer better camera since it's what I take pictures of my kids with but don't need other stuff from the X. Plus the cost is insane!

I have a 6, and it's been slowwww for awhile now. I've been due for an upgrade since May and I just cracked my screen so I think I'll prob upgrade to an 8 plus here soon. Can't wait to have a better camera, all my pics are so fuzzy unless it's perfect outdoor lighting. My poor kids only have fuzzy pics of their younger years lol

@nana87: I have a 6 and it was doing that with the battery, too. I, also, had some other issues and most recently it became unusable. It was a heavy brick for the last two days since I tried restoring it and couldn't get activated or use my wifi.
I took it to the apple store and luckily, I completely forgot I got the apple care plus and they were able to replace it with a new 6. Now that I have the warranty, I'm going to have my DH take his phone in and get his issues looked at.
Maybe it's something you can check online to see if you have apple care.

I like the portrait feature on the new one, but I don't want a giant phone. I'm disappointed that it's not available on the "regular" sized 8. I do a lot of running, so I definitely don't want to carry around a tablet sized phone on my arm. I don't know what I will do... But I would like to reduce my monthly cell phone bill instead of adding some crazy huge payment plan to it.
nectarine / 2243 posts
For anyone with battery issues on their current phones ...a new battery from apple costs $79. That's a pretty significant savings compared to purchasing a new 8 or X!
Also: For any verizon users: One of my prior 6s' was dying a slow death. I took it in and the guy said, ok, well, you currently have insurance but it doesn't cover phone replacement. If I upgrade your insurance, I can send you a new phone tomorrow. And he did. And it was free. Old insurance $5, new insurance $11 and I can revert to old insurance at anytime.

I just found this great article about buying a phone through Apple and not through your wireless carrier. There are a few reasons Apple's deal is better. You get an unlocked phone and apple care for $5 more a month than what your wireless carrier payment plan would charge. It great not having to think I'm stuck with AT&T and that I should be able to switch if I wanted and take my phone.

I need to save this when I need to buy my next iPhone.

@nana87: This is a known problem with 6Ses - mine was doing it too. Enter your serial number at the Apple website here: https://www.apple.com/support/iphone6s-unexpectedshutdown/ and you might be eligible for a free battery replacement.
