Granted, I have only been there for party weekends, but I think on the whole it's more casual than the cities you mentioned. Maybe because it gets so hot! There are certainly a lot of very nice restaurants that would call for nicer attire, but for hanging out in the daytime and doing touristy stuff you can get away with pretty much anything.

I went to undergrad in Nola. Attire is very casual unless you're going out to a nice restaurant. But for just walking around the French Quarter? Very casual. And the streets (especially Bourbon) are dirty, so I'd avoid wearing super expensive shoes.

I think New Orleans is a place where anything goes, from t-shirts and jeans to cocktail dresses!

For my week in the French quarter I went everyday casual, cute summer dresses with comfy walking shoes.

Anything goes! I lived in dresses and flip flops for walking around, dressed up if going to a nice dinner.

I'm from there. Not fancy at all. I would say we are way casual - like others said - flip flips, shorts, etc. If you are going to a nice restaurant I would check their dress code, but I bet they aren't even as dressy as you would think.

Very, very casual! I'd actually suggest wearing some closed-toed shoes, rather than the flip flops others have suggested, mainly because in the Bourbon St. area, the streets can be full of all sorts of things that you don't want on your toes!

No flip flops! Closed-toed shoes are a must! Heels or flats, totally your call, but if it's for evening, gotta go with closed-toe. It's just too dirty and wet for anything else. The last thing you want is to be sliding around in a pair of (wet) flip flops.

Born and raised here! Dress cool/casual but don't wear shorts out to a nice restaurant. Bring some layers because it can randomly get cold, but it will probably be in the 70s.
If you're concerned about stepping in muddy beer/pee/puke...don't go to Bourbon street. Just sayin. Flip flops/sandals are fine everywhere else.
