Have dinner at August if you can – it’s one of Chef Josh Besh’s restaurants (along with Luke and others) and very, very good. The black truffle gnocchi was fantastic! It’s also a really beautiful space, lots of old beams and exposed brick work. Good wine list. http://www.restaurantaugust.com/
We also liked the Camellia Grill – classic grill food. It’s an open kitchen/grill and the cooks give each other the business back and forth all day; very welcoming place, good diner burgers.

Make time one night for dinner @ Commanders Palace. I would walk back ther (from CANADA!) to eat that dinner again. So so so worth it.
We also really enjoyed Kingfish, they had a very inventive and interesting cocktail menu, and again, the food was awesome.
We were directed to a bar called Maison on Frenchmen St for good local music and the jazz musicians blew my mind. Just a bunch of local guys having fun playing music, no real set list just amazing musical talent.
Lastly, Burbon St was a let down for me. Too much booze, drunk people, thumping music and neon lights. We avoided it as much as possible. There is so much culture in that city and Burbon is NOT a good representation of it all.

-Chargrilled oysters at Acme oyster house
-Frenchmen Street for music.
-Verte Marte for a po boy for take out
-Jean Laffite's Blacksmith shop - dark and somewhat touristy bar but we had a blast there numerous times.
-Take a street car to the garden district and walk around a cemetary.
-Eat breakfast at Cafe DuMonde, go to the St. Louis cathedral and hit the French Market for lunch
-Breakfast at Mother's.
Have a great time! I'm so jealous and can't wait to go back!!!

Oh, I forgot, for fun things to do, we did a walking tour of one of the cemeteries and it was super neat. Tons of history, cool info and it was a great way to see the french quarter. We also got passes for the hop-on hop-off bus to get around to the shopping district and garden district without much effort or cab fare.

We were just at the hotel monteleone in September (my husband also on a conference I tagged along on). I will warn you, just so you can set appropriate expectations, the rooms are not very nice (especially considering what we were expecting because the common areas are SO nice). I mean, they are clean. But tiny tiny and cheap bedding. I think knowing that going in would've helped me because I was thinking this was a really nice hotel and I was super disappointed when we checked in.
As for restaurants, we liked Nola (Emeril's restaurant) which is just a few blocks away and walkable. Also you have to go to the French Market and Cafe Dumont--- beignets and chicory coffee… yum!

- Take trolley down to Garden District and gawk at the giant houses; can also go to Audubon Park and Zoo down there
- Magazine street is a loooong street full of awesome shopping and restaurants. It's not walkable though, so you'd need a car
-Jackson Square has some awesome antique shops and restaurants, as well as street artists. The St. Louis Cathedral is worth a visit
I lived there for a year and never took one of those haunted graveyard tours! Always wanted to!

@winniebee: I didn't. But the common areas are very nice so I'd expect it to be nice.

We went there on our honeymoon. We were super poor so we stuck to cheap eats. For lunch I recommend Johnny's or central grocery, both are in the French quartet. For brunch, I've heard court of two sisters is good.

I went to college in New Orleans. Hotel Monteleone has a great carousel bar. For casual restaurants I recommend Acme Osyter House (this one is very close to your hotel) and the Gumbo Shop. For a nicer restaurant I recommend Irene's. Not sure how you feel about gay bars, but Napoleon's Itch is my favorite bar on Bourbon St. It's swanky, less crowded, smoke-free, and they have a ton of awesome martinis.

@yoursilverlining: Camellia Grill is my favorite restaurant in New Orleans! I spent many a late night/early morning there in college.
