LO is a great nurser and is sleeping 2-3 hours a night, then I wake up to feed him. The time spent feeding varies. However, when I put him back to lay down in his crib he gets super fussy, I wait a bit and then end up having to pick him back up (he is 5 days old). Ugh-it is getting old! This is after I burp him, will change diaper if dirty, give gripe water for gas...i usually end up staying up an hour after our original nursing session ended just trying to put him back down. Help!

Does he fall asleep while feeding and then wakes up when u put him down? Or is he wide awake when u put him down?

I'm curious about this too... My boys are 3 weeks old and doing the same thing. They fall asleep while nursing though and wake up when we go to put them down. I'm going crazy from no sleep over here.

My 2 week old does the same thing, especially at night! She will only sleep if I hold her or if she is next to me in bed. I didn't want to cosleep but that's the only way I've been able to get any sleep.

This happened our second night home so we went and bought this:

We're now trying to get her back in the pack n play so we'll see how that goes. She's 7 weeks and on the longer side so we want to transition her before she can't fit anymore.

@banana its a combo of both, he falls asleep on the boob and then wakes up when i put him on his back and occasionally is awake when i put him down.
@shimmer I was up every 30 mins last night playing this game! It about killed me!
@sunny I can't pull up the link now but I will later...I have a friend with 3 children under 4 and asked her advice last night and she said they all slept in a pack & play too.
Well girls...he is inconsistent but I'll take what I can get! We nursed off and on from 1215 until about 230 after several attempts to put him down. I went and laid down on the couch with him on my stomach...we slept until 615!! Argh! But yay! So now I'm engorged, but at least I got 4 hours of sleep!

Aww those days are tough for sure. I remember there were nights where she would just cry even though she wasn't hungry or dirty. Sometimes you just have to deal with it until they grow some!
My daughter went through a phase where she would wake up every time she felt us lowering her into the crib. We had to make sure she was REALLY asleep and really carefully do it.

This is pretty normal. I would rock my newborn for a good amount of time before putting her down.

@lydg: I have several "techniques" that works for my newborn depending on the situation. My newborn is 5 weeks old and what seems to work for us in the situation u described is I would nurse her and if she falls asleep I would unlatch her and rock her holding her in the same side-lying position. Once I feel she has fallen into deep sleep I would lay her down in the same exact position (sideways). As soon as I lay her down, I would rock the pack n play for a minute and then stop. After maybe 10'mins inwould slowly move her onto her back. Maybe try that?

I would sometimes nurse her with the boppy pillow and then very gently lift her with the boppy and put her down with the boppy. It kind of acts as a shock absorber so she doesnt always notice that I have put her down. It gets better...

We found that the double swaddle was the key to getting our LO to go back down without waking up. We double swaddled with 2 A&A blankets. Its seemed that she still felt snuggled and didn't even notice.

LO used to do the same...I swear, no matter how slowly and gently we tried to lower she into her Moses basket, the lowering motion was like an alarm for her and she would wake right back up!! It does get better!!
The only thing that got us through the early days was sleeping on the sofa and letting her sleep on us. My husband and I tok shifts - one person had baby duty from 11pm-3am while the other slept, then we switched out at 3am. We bottle feed though, don't know if that's something you plan on doing or not.
Getting through the first month is all about just surviving! Good luck!

While this is normal, I just want to send my support. LO is 14 weeks old now and I remember those early days quite well. The first month was really, really rough and it seems like it will last forever. Just know that it doesn't and you will get through this!

My boy was the same, night time feeding sessions would take 1-2 hours. He's 9 weeks today and as of the last few weeks I can put him down almost straight after feeding and he goes/stays asleep. I guess he's learnt that night time is for sleeping.
Hang in there, it's tough to start but as the weeks go by it gets better.

@lydg: I second the double swaddle! I wrote a similar post to yours when my LO was 6 days old. My pediatrician told me to double swaddle when he was around 10 days and he has slept so much better from the very first night I tried it. I leave him in diaper only to prevent overheating and put miracle blanket first, the A&A blanket on outside. I also bought the Arms Reach Cosleeper which makes a little easier to slide him in without jostling too much. The only other thing I did that may have helped was get him in the sunshine in the morning to try to help him differentiate day vs. night. Good luck! It gets better!

@amelieisme: I noticed they do that in the hospital...I need to get on it. He is a self-soother with his fingers and goes crazy when I cover or put gloves on him.
