Next time you move are you getting movers or doing it yourself?
We had movers last time and now I think I'm so spoiled that I would want them again should we ever end up moving again.

We always move ourselves. We invite a bunch of my family over and feed them in exchange for their labor. We also do the same for them. We actually own our own box truck, so that definitely helps!
Eta: I should mention we pack ourselves, they just help with the moving of things. Though, my grandma is always in charge of cleaning the new and old places.

@Boogs: Yeah, that would help! I think I'm too old and tired to schlep all my stuff... or maybe my stuff is too big nowadays... or maybe I'm just lazy.

We move ourselves. I'm too cheap to pay movers. It was nice the one time we had them. My husband's company moved us across country once.

Never moving again!! But the last two times we had movers and it was sooooooooo nice. And a small cost in comparison with buying a house. I think last time it was only $300.

Movers all the way. Last time I tried a self move I threw my back out and missed a week of work - which ended up being more expensive than the movers would have been.

We've always moved ourselves, but never again. We'll hire movers from here on out. Now that we've bought a house we've acquired too much stuff. Plus, I know it will only be harder with kids running around.

We've definitely never had as much stuff as we have now. I'd love to talk DH into movers next time, that's for sure.

We just moved...with a 5 week old...and it sucked. We had friends and family help. Definitely hiring movers next time.

We've always just moved on our own. For now, we don't have much stuff because we've only ever been renters.
Maybe years after we've owned our own home and we've accumulated tons of stuff!

I'm hoping there will be no next time. But we had movers for the last move and would do it again.

I used to move by myself, but have hired movers the last few times and it is definitely a luxury I will always make sure to have! The last ones were the "fireman movers." Fireman who off-duty move stuff...they were fantastic!!

We moved from the suburbs and into the city and hired movers for $400. A worthy investment because we moved into a 3rd story walk-up and would never have been able to manage the large furniture up the stairs on our own!!

I've never had movers, but I told my husband that we're hiring out next time we move! My ideal situation is to hire a PODS storage bin, pack it at my leisure, have them ship it to my new house and then hire some people to unpack it/put everything away.

we would never, ever move ourselves. every place we've lived in has had stairs. we used to live in a 4th floor walkup!

we aren't planning on moving. I would rather renovate and pay off my house then move... but if we had to then we would hire movers.

Hiring movers is some of the best money I've ever spent! It's completely worth it.

We're still waiting for our household goods to arrive! The Army moved our stuff this time and will move them again when we leave Hawaii.

We're settling on our house on Friday and moving over the next two weekends. The house is five minutes away and we're doing it ourselves. I'm jealous of you lucky ducks who can afford movers!

We're moving cross country in a week and a half with our 3.5 month old daughter. Our move is being paid for by my new job, and we hired movers who will pack up our entire house for us. No way would I be able to pack up the house and load the truck with an infant!

We had movers last time, and we had them pack everything for us as well. It was well worth the money!

If we moved locally, we'd move ourselves. Otherwise, I'd hire movers!

We've always moved ourselves, but the next time we move will be when we're in our mid- to late-30s, with a house full of furniture, so we'll definitely hire movers then. That's a long way off though, we love our house and it's plenty of room for now.

Movers. I don't like to ask people to help, because really, furniture is heavy and I don't want friends and family to hurt themselves or damage anything. I've moved into and out of a 5th floor walkup, a garden apartment and did an international move with door to door service...I'll never do it myself again if I don't have to.

After hiring movers this past time, there's no way I'd go without in the future! I think it's totally worth the expense. (We packed everything ourselves, but hired movers to load and unload.)

since the first time i used movers 10 years ago, i have not looked back--movers all the way! we would probably seriously injure or kill ourselves trying to move all our furniture.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
I have always used my big family as my movers. DH and I are probably going to hire movers for the furniture this next time though. Just cause it is a pain since we are in a condo building and the elevators. Will do boxes and clothes ourselves. Hopefully we find a house soon and we will be needing to hire some soon. And I am pregnant, so that means that I don't have to carry any boxes, right??

We have always moved ourselves, but I'm hoping when my husband starts his job in 2 years we can get moving costs in his contract and then have movers.

We are moving next week, and are most definitely using movers! I think once you use movers, it's really hard to go back to moving yourself.
My worst moving experience was moving myself out of my very first apartment, which was on the 4th floor of a walk-up...in July! And I had the flu. Ugh.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
I want to use movers, but DH says he wants to do it himself with his friends + dad + trailer...
coconut / 8234 posts
We used to do friends until we were moving to a 4th floor walk-up. Movers all the way. We are moving out of that apartment soon so it shall be movers again!

Movers. My husband knows a guy who is a mover, but does side jobs, and is much cheaper than hiring the company. It was such a help when we moved into our house.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
Ourselves. We're too cheap. @Boogs: ditto! Pizza & Beer!
pear / 1510 posts
All about the movers. They're fast, they know what they're doing, and they fit a couch down the hallway into a back bedroom that DH and thought would never fit. All hail movers!
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
We move ourselves. Like pp mentioned, we box everything up then have friends and family help us load up and unload at the new place in exchange for food. My mom is responsible for tidying/sweeping up the the new and old place.
