I really like the name Valentina, but am thinking of nicknames. Are there any other than Val or Tina?
My Mum knows a few older friends called Val, they are all lovely but remind me of an older person. I have a cousin Tina who doesn't really get on with the family although I do like the name Tina. Any other suggestions?

ETA: Valentina is a lovely name! Also, the only Vals I know are young, so I don't see it as being old lady-ish at all!

I love the name Valentina, but I have an aunt Val and the whole nickname thing ruined it for me. Sorry I'm of no help

Our dog is nicknamed Val, short for Valkyrie. It doesn't seem old to me! I agree with Lenny and Lena. You could probably pull off Nina too.

I honestly think a lot of these nns are a stretch! I think Val is cute, and in my experience with my daughter, you may not have much control over her nn. Val would be the most obvious choice to others when you're not around, just a heads up. It drives me nuts that DD's daycare teachers and other people call her "harp" for short. But there's not much I can do about it so we just roll with it. A little boy in her class actually calls her "Harp Harp." Never thought that would be on her NN list!

@PrincessBaby: we've had some pretty good control. My older daughter learned to say "Please don't call me Cee Cee" to all people who tried to nickname her the obvious thing.
We pre-empted our younger daughter's obvious nickname which would have been Maggie. We didn't like that, so we chose Maisie and everyone abides by it.

Thats just me though. I have a name with a VERY common nn and I don't let people call me by it. My name is 5 letters.... it doesn't take that long to say.... stop being lazy. lol

@PrincessBaby: oh god! Honestly, I think no one will shorten it. And if you hate Harp, nip it in the bud. With the exception of my family (and a few idiots who called me Katie when I totally am not one), I always went by my full name. No one questioned it.
