I honesty never used the filter.. I found no matter how hard I sucked, stuff never made it up the entire removable plastic tube

I believe they are supposed to be changed every time you use it but we always did a rinse and air dry and would use one for about a week.

We haven't had to change it yet (LO is six weeks), but I wash it in hot water every day/every other day~
