Do you change the filter after every use, or every cold? I bought one a few months ago when my baby was sick, and she woke up sick today. We are heading to the store for supplies and I'm not sure if I should buy more filters or if the one or two I have is enough to get through this cold?

I change it when it starts to look gross or I can't remember when I last changed it (which is every time). We don't use it very often because it's hard for me to hold her down and suck the snot out by myself.

I change it when is looks gross. I probably should change it more often, but I don't use it as much anymore. Now that DS is 2, I try to get him to agree to me sucking out the boogers by making a big deal about how gross it is when I blow it out.

No. Her snot never really reach that high. I'd just change it if it looked like something touched it.

@snowjewelz: That's pretty much my policy too. I had a pack of a bunch of filters and have maybe switched the filter out 3 or 4 times in the whole 18 months we've had the thing. It's never looked dirty, though?

@twodoghouse: DH and I actually discussed this lol. We were like, who is sucking SO hard that the snot would get all the way up there?! Even when DD's snot is pretty runny it never really went up the higher half of the tube!

I wash the plastic part frequently but I have t changed the filter because snot has never reached anywhere near that far.

Fun tidbit, I was hanging out with a pediatrician friend recently and asked him about snot-suckers, since LO didn't get her first cold until a couple weeks ago at 7 months and we have never used a bulb sucker or the NoseFrida. Friend said that babies don't need their noses sucked after they are a couple months old, since after that the nostrils are wide enough they can get it clear on their own. That eased my confusion since LO has been snotty/sniffly/runny ever since she started daycare a few weeks ago and I have yet to experience a moment when I thought she needed suction at all. Which made me wonder when people decide to use it? At this point I don't know that I see us ever using it.

same as above, only when it looks gross, which is never. I think I've changed it 3x in 8 months? And one time was because we lost the filter in the cleaning process.

@PawPrints: they may not need them sucked but man does it seem to make them feel better. It's like blowing your nose it gets rid of all the excess snot that's threatening to sit on your top lip.

@snowjewelz: when I have put saline spray in her nose before sucking, I've had it hit the filter. But I sucked really hard too. I also could taste the saline so I'm pretty certain the filter does nothing anything.
I changed it every once in a while, whenever I thought of it I guess. I bought an extra pack of filters but she learned to blow her nose before I used one from the new pack.

@PawPrints: Now that my son is older I'm convinced this isn't really a baby product. I've used it more in the last year (my son is 3 1/2) than I ever did when he was a newborn or toddler. Until they figure out how to blow their noses it's necessary unless you don't mind hearing them breathe through snot whenever their nose is stuffy. I'm not sure how old is too old to be using it but we're not done with it yet at my house!

I change it at the end of each day when she's sick.
