My son is a little more than 2 years old. He is fully potty trained as long as we take him to the potty. This means every hour we sit him on the potty and pees and tries to poop. He has less than two accidents a day. He is not nighttime or nap trained (though at home he never pees during nap only at preschool).
We are ready for the next step. How do we get him to tell us he needs to go. Usually he tells us when he goes but never before. Any types or tricks?

Do you know what might happen if you stopped taking him so often? Maybe he'll have more accidents, at first, but then he might start learning how to speak up about going to the potty?
When we potty trained, we started off taking her to the potty, but we quickly realized that she liked having control of the situation so we stopped. Then she started heading to the potty by herself when she had to go.

When we haven't taken him he pees his pants and does nothing about it. But we haven't tried since he poop trained.

Does modeling behavior work for children that young? Let's say you and your husband announce when you have to go potty. Then you can ask each other and ask him. He may say no or yes, but getting him to vocalize his needs may help him make a connection with the sensation and action.

It sounds like he's not ready? How long have you been taking him every hour?
When we decided to train DD was really vocal about when she had dirty diapers. Often she would say she went, but when we checked there was nothing. A minute or two later, hello turd!!
We kept dd bottomless and showed her that she had to pee and poop in the potty. It took 24 hours for her to learn and start going on her own. We started potty training 2 weeks before she turned 2.
At home we kept her bottomless and she would run to potty when she had to pee or poop. We just wiped her.
After about 2 weeks we put underwear and pants on her at home. She would run to the potty and we'd have to help her take her pants off. About 2 weeks after that she started saying she had to go before heading to the potty.
Now she can pull her pants down and up, sit on the toilet (we started on a potty) and go. She wipes pees on her own, but needs help wiping her booty.

@chopsuey119: he's need doing all of this for over 6 months now. He is slow to talk so he doesn't verbalize much. He has no accidents if we take him. He can take his clothes off, get on the potty and finish up and get off. So the only thing missing is the words and asking. So I don't think it isn't ready to potty train.

@brownie: Hurmm.. I would do what @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: suggested then.. and see if that works?
Does he ever give you nonverbal cues? Sometimes my daughter will be playing and grab her crotch 
So I make her go to the potty!

Definitely second what @sloaneandpuffy suggested - he needs to be rewarded for initiating. I also agree that you and your husband modeling the desired behavior (announcing, "I need to go potty" before retreating to the restroom) would be a great companion to a motivational system.

@sloaneandpuffy: we have skittles if he poops in the potty or asks. But it doesn't seem to help. He doesn't seem to be motivated by them (and he doesn't ever get them any other way).
