I'm 6 weeks pregnant, and have had a LOT of dental surgeries lately, my 2nd to last one is scheduled for the 9th- which is putting screws in my jaw, so in the past I've used Novocaine/numbing medicines but now i'm not sure if I can or not? I'm getting mixed reviews online.
Have you had any dental work while pregnant?
Edit- I will be 8 weeks at the appointment.

I would just tell your dentist that you are pregnant, and I'm sure they will make the best decision for you.

My dentist won't do any dental work on pregnant women...only cleanings!

I had to have a root cannal at 17 weeks. I talked with my MD and dentists and they were both comfortable with me using it. Since it is a topical/subdermal medication not much is absorbed into the blood stream.
When I went back in to have some gum work done and the crown put on they just used lidocaine, which worked fine too. Make sure not to take Ibuprofen (that is what my dentsist usually recomends for pain) and take some Tylenol before hand.

The second trimester is the safest time to do any work, usually we hold off until after the pregnancy unless its an emergency and will use lidocaine without epi. Talk to your dentist and you will most likely need permission from your OB as well.

I had a root canal done while I was about 6 months pregnant. I got a little lecture from my endodontist about how they don't use Novocaine anymore- now it's lidocaine (I think). But he had no issues with giving it to me. The part that really sucked in all honesty was not being able to take the painkillers afterwards. I was in way more pain after the surgery than during- the 30 min it took for the Advil or whatever I was allowed to take kicked in was seriously excruciating! So my advice would be to take that as soon as you can.

I had a cavity filled and my dentist (who was also pregnant at the time) said she preferred to do the filling in my second trimester (not sure if that's an option for you). And she started with the lowest amount of novocaine and added as I was experiencing discomfort.
When I asked my OB about having a cavity filled, she said "Do it!" and my dentist didn't require a note from her. I just asked for peace of mind.

my dentist prefers to do only emergency dental work while pregnant. If it can wait til after the pregnancy then they prefer to wait.
