It sounds like you're talking about the maternit21 test. I had it done at 12 weeks and we found out the results a week later. I had it because it checks for chromosomal abnormalities (I miscarried our first baby and it was later found out she had an abnormality that caused the 2nd X chromosome to not form completely). From what I understand, it's usually offered to those who are high risk for chromosomal defects.

They told me it was 99% accurate. We're having a boy- there's pretty much no other way for there to be a Y chromosome in my blood unless the baby is a boy! We've had 2 ultrasounds since and they have confirmed the gender.

my friend had that test done and said it was accurate for her! well, she's still pregnant, but she said it was obvious.

as far as the guess via ultrasound, there's the whole "nub" theory - and it was right for us!

I had the MaterniT21 test at 10 weeks and it said boy, which was confirmed with 2 ultrasounds. If the results say girl, it's *possible* that they just didn't have any Ys show up in your sample, potentially because it's too early.

And there's a tiny percentage chance of it being wrong if it says boy, too. My friend's wife is a genetic counselor and she explained it to me, because I was very confused at how it could happen. Basically, it has something to do with the placenta having a very slim possibility of producing Y chromosomes, even though the baby is genetically a girl. But it's such a slim chance, you'd basically be a case for a text book.
