As long as the person that I was visiting did not have a communicable illness, I wouldn't mind taking LO. I'd probably keep LO close to me when in the halls as you don't know what sort of illness others may have, but other than that, enjoy your visit.

@citymouse: we took our a 6 week old to a hospice house to visit my grandmother before she died. i know that's not a nursing home, but it's similar. i wouldn't have a problem taking a newborn to a nursing home.

We didn't wait. LO was four weeks when we took her to visit DH's 96yo aunt.
I figured it was more like an apartment building than a leper colony.

I took my son to a nursing home at 2-3 weeks old to visit my grandma who was dying. I carried him in the ergo and kept him close to me. I don't regret it at all.

@citymouse: I'd be fine even at a month. My mom is a nurse at a nursing home and the residents all love seeing babies. If you felt very uncertain, wear your LO so that there is limited access.

I work at a nursing home. I'll probably bring baby in at 2-3 weeks to see patients and coworkers. And if anyone wants to hold baby that will hopefully be in an ergo, they can sanitize.

I'm definitely overly cautious with this, but I work in an ICU and take care of lots of nursing home residents - many with chronic infections. I would avoid bringing a LO if possible, but I would at least wait until after the first round of vaccines. I would only let the person who we are visiting hold her and then wash the baby's hands & face afterwards. Just my opinion!

I should add that the nursing home I work at has a few patient who are known to play in their BMs... Obviously I wouldn't let just everyone touch a baby.

@Running Elley: Did you take him out at all?
@MrsF: Unfortunately, I will have to bring the baby at some point... It's my mom.

@citymouse: Just in my grandma's private room so she and my grandpa could hold him!
