We are grade to NYC for a few days and are mainly planing on walking and taking the subway. My current plan is to put the 11 month old in the ergo carrier and use our umbrella stroller for my petite 3 year old. Thoughts? Suggestions?

No help at all sorry! But following for general NYC tips - if anyone knows how to get last minute tickets to shows I would love to know how! Looking online everything seems to be sold out!

@Jone0603: but FYI I think your idea sounds awesome and what I would do

@Jone0603: sounds perfect! This was my strategy at that age whenever we took guests sightseeing in Manhattan (we live in Brooklyn). Just make sure it's a decent, sturdy, umbrella stroller. I Know some people buy $20 from toys R us for travel (planning to dispose of them), and I think that won't hold up to the bumpy sidewalks.
Have fun!!
@Nutella: @meadow: yes, tkts in Times Square or south street seaport. Or, individual theaters have different policies on giving away a few tickets at will call shirtly before shows start.

Some subway stations have elevators. If you look at a subway map, they're the ones with the little handicap accessible/wheelchair icon next to the name. It's not everywhere by far, but if you can mostly get on and off at these, that's a lot less time carrying the stroller up the stairs.

@Jone0603: yup, that's a good plan. does your umbrella stroller have a carry strap when you fold it up? I would have it folded to go up and down subway stairs since your older one can walk. And then open it when you are back up to ground level.

@Nutella: the TKTS booth has tickets to different shows every day. If you are set on a particular show, just stop by that theater's box office earlier in the day and ask if they have tickets for a show. My mom was just here and got tickets to Book of Mormon doing that--but those tickets are full price. The ones at TKTS are discounted.

Yes, what @Anagram: said. Elevators can be slow, broken, hard to find, and at out of the way stops. I wouldn't plan to rely on them. Anyway, people are surprisingly helpful about offering to help me carry a stroller up/down stairs.

That sounds like a good plan to me. We only have one LO but we have traveled with her, an umbrella stroller, plus multiple suitcases through the subway. We fold up our stroller and just carry it up and down stairs. Ours has a strap so it is very easy. Way easier than trying to find and wait for elevators.

Are you going in the summer? An ergo all day in the city does not sound fun!

I'll just echo what previous posters have said. Be aware that not all subway stations have elevators or escalators and depending on what station you're in, that could mean one flight of stairs or multiple flights of stairs. If you're traveling with a group, and someone can help you with the stroller, you'll be fine. If not, I'd locate the handicap accessible stations ahead of time and plan accordingly. And yes to what @T.H.O.U.: said - NYC is hella hot and humid later in the summer. I couldn't wear an ergo all day. Will your 3 yo walk some so you can get a break and put the baby in the stroller?

@T.H.O.U.: true! But she can switch the baby in/out of the stroller while the big one plays or takes a turn walking.

I might consider taking a 2nd umbrella stroller. How many adults will there be? The ergo can and will get super hot. It might be nice to have a place to strap both kids in if you are stopping for lunch/eating outside, or sitting or stuck in the subway. A sweaty heavy 11 month old stuck to me in a hot subway car doesn't sound like fun after lugging them around for 6 hours. You can cram the ergo in the bottom of one of the strollers or use the empty stroller to push bags around.
The blog Love Taza has a decent (but maybe a tad outdated) map of accessible subway stations. Keep in mind that some have elevators but that doesn't mean you can access every subway platform from that elevator. I've gotten stuck many times (but strangers always offer to help me out).
