I'm not in NYC but I've had a cronut. It was ok - not at all what I expected. Tasted like a donut.

I know they sell them in Santa Monica CA... some place supposedly makes good ones cheaper..so they might in Washington too!

Ok, I made my own this weekend with Pillsbury Cresant dough. I didn't have the cutouts to make donuts so I cut them into squares. The dough in the middle didn't cook so I'll have to try them again. Maybe I'll try thin rectangles next time to make sure they cook.
I wasn't too impressed with them. Maybe I should make a glaze or a filling but them by themselves was just okay.

No, and I'm in agreement with all above who wouldn't stand in line. We used to live in the West Village and seeing the lines around the corner for the Magnolia Bakery were just insane. Especially as there were quite a few cupcake places around the Village that were just as good (some say much better) where there were no lines at all! Crazy.

Please someone get the real thing and report back. My local radio station's morning show tried a knock off and loved it. There was dead air while they chewed. I'm intrigued.

@sweetooth: Apparently there is a black market for cronuts, too. People on craigslist are asking for sexual favors in exchange for a cronut. Yeah, crazy! Bakery is only making 200 per day so the craze will continue.
