After living overseas for 7 years, it looks like DH and I will be moving "home" to NYC before the end of 2014, possibly as soon as August. While I'm super excited, I'm feeling a bit lost as we start considering where we'd like to live...the last time I was living in New York, I was 23 and single! Now we'll be a family of four (DH, myself, DD#1 who will be just over 2, and DD#2, who will be anywhere from 3-6 months old at the time of our move), so obviously our wants & needs have changed drastically, as has the city itself!

Our plan is to rent in the city for a year or two while we decide what we'd like to do long term (we'll most likely be moving to the suburbs but want to take our time deciding where to buy).

Can any NYC bees help me out with neighborhood suggestions as we begin our search? We're primarily looking at lower Manhattan (TriBeCa, Battery Park) or areas of Brooklyn with a decent commute into lower Manhattan, although I'm trying to convince hubby that there are great resources for families uptown if he's willing to do the longer subway ride each day. Priorities are safety, kid-friendly outdoor space, and availability of larger apartments (we're going to need 3 bedrooms and ideal 1200 sq ft or more).

I'd also welcome any feedback you can offer on listervs, Facebook groups, or mailing lists you think I should get myself on to keep on top of kids' activities, deals, and meetups. I'm nervous that the timing of our move might mean we miss out on fall activities for my toddler, so I want to stay on top of things.

Thanks so much!!
