Thanks again, ladies. I do understand how fast the market moves and am only looking at places right now to get an idea of what's available - unfortunately we can't afford to pay rent on our place in HK and an apartment in New York (at the same time), so we won't be putting in offers until I'm actually on the ground in a few months. You're giving me lots to think about, which is exactly what I wanted DD#2 will arrive any day now, so I'm anticipating lots of iPhone apartment searching during long nursing sessions!
@Shortcake: Thanks for the additional neighborhood suggestions - I think DH spotted something he liked in Boerum Hill but it wasn't a neighborhood we were familiar with - good to hear it's one we should be considering!
@Mrs. Bee: Thanks for the suggestions on agencies - we'll definitely plan to use a broker (and hopefully the fees are going to be covered by DH's employer - we're not that far into negotiations yet)
@Hilsy85: Yes, I think that unfortunately the top of our budget is the bottom of the market for 3's in Manhattan - meaning if we get into a bidding war we'll probably be shut down by a higher offer.
I'd been leaning towards Manhattan because it's "what I know", albeit from pretty much a previous lifetime...you've all got me pretty much swayed strongly towards Brooklyn now though, which will make DH very happy as it's his top pick. He'll be less thrilled that I'm probably going to go buy another monster of a stroller to add to our collection, but oh well!

@PinkElephant: I am convinced the bad rap Park Slope gets is a figment of the media's imagination! The vibe is totally normal and all the parents I've met are down-to-earth and totally chill (more chill than on HB to be honest).
I had ruled out Park Slope because I wanted to avoid the crazy I'd heard so much about in the media, but it turns out there's way more apartment inventory in PS than Cobble Hill/Brooklyn Heights so we ended up here and I'm so happy we did. Others have mentioned the Park Slope Parents email list - it's been a lifesaver for me. I joined a group for people with babies born the same month and it introduced me to 30+ great moms who were really inclusive and welcoming. You have to put yourself out there and go to the meetups, playdates, etc., but it is definitely possible to meet people easily.
